Hi,

Sorry, another swingarm-related question: I'm fitting the rear axle I have (which as far as I know is the right one, since it fits the wheel and everything else I have!) and the adjusting holes it passes through in the swingarm are actually wider than the axle.

Is this OK? Will the axle stay in place when the adjusters are on and the nut is tightened? I don't remember ever seeing that on anything before. Do I somehow have some wrong parts? Very Happy

You're missing axle/adjuster plates by the looks of it, DON'T use it like that. What bike is it.

Looks like you're missing the internal blocks. They slide inside the arm and stop you crushing the box section.

Hi Pete,

What do these blocks look like?

Weirdly I have another swingarm which is a bit different but the axle does fit that. Can't see anything that looks removable on it, though. I don't think I can use that one because it's obviously from a different year of bike - the pivot bearings are different, for instance.

Incidentally, the calliper mount bracket I have seems to be the same - it has a bigger hole diameter for the axle. Is that normal or is there supposed to be a bushing in that too?

Confused.

I'm not familiar with the bike, but if you clamp up that empty box section with the axle nut it will crush the sides inwards. Look inside the box section and see if there's any evidence of scrape marks from a sliding block that should be in there.

Hmm. OK. False alarm - I found out that the swingarm I got today has the holes the correct width.

It does appear to have the blocks you speak of too, but they're actually welded in and are solid billet.

Christ knows why I have a swingarm for a completely different bike, but anyway, my new one is the right one and will fit. Very Happy

This doesn't sound right either. They should be able to move back and forth over the whole length of that slotted hole in the swingarm. Usually by a locknut adjuster on the very end of the swingarm.

If they're welded in place, how are you going to adjust your chain?

Here's what you're supposed to have.

Nope. The axle passes through a slotted hole in a solid block in the swingarm. The chain adjusters go either side of the block. Like this:

My confusion was because the swingarm I got with the box-of-bits (er, bike) had wider holes - I think it must have been for a different year of bike or something.

Stinkwheel: That diagram is for a different bike with what looks like dual rear shocks - mine is a single shock, so possibly a different year?

Anyway, I think I'm sorted now. Got a new swingarm today because I was missing some of the mounting parts for the one that came with it, and that's when having the wrong one in the first place came to light. Thanks for the help everyone.
