H tags are like newspaper headlines. The front page story in giant bold writing would be a H1 tag. This being the most important header on the page, telling the search engines that the content below it is important.
Then as you get less important stories on the front page of a newspaper further down, is where H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6 come in.
Kind of like this:-
<h1>This is the page title and heading</h1>
<h2>These would be sub headings and sections</h2>
<h3>Maybe something like a side bar heading</h3>
<h4>These may be widget headings near the footer</h4>
<h5>Again, maybe contact headings near the footer</h5>
<h6>Footer section headings</h6>
EVERY page on your website should have at least a H1 tag, with the title of the page content, then progressively use smaller and smaller H tags as you go down the page layout.
You don't have to use every H tag on every page but you should always have a H1 at least.
So you could have something like:-
<h1>Tips on how to wash your bike</h1>
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
<h2>Things not to use on your bike when cleaning it</h2>

So you can break the page up with several H2's after the H1, etc. |

Back links are just links to your website from another website. There are many ways of doing it and some will cause more harm than good.
You could pay a firm to do a link building campaign for you and if they were any good, they might do it properly but you can get companies who will just use spammy methods to create hundreds of back links to your site.
Quality over quantity is what you want.
Example:
You've got a landscape gardening business and a friend of yours owns a hugely popular gardening blog/website. Having your friend create a back link to your website from his, will carry far more weight than someone who has hardly any traffic to their site. That one link would be worth 100 shit ones.
You also don't want back links from irrelevant websites, so asking your mate who is a hair dresser to link to your gardening site, isn't going to do you any favours.
As the Wikipedia page Paddy linked to suggests, links from one site to another are like votes. Google will look at your back links to your site, see your friends really popular website linking to you and think, this must be more important than the next site because it has this really popular site linking back to them, thus pushing you a little higher in search engines.
There's loads of free ways to build back links, you can use web directories such as Yahoo and create a link in the relevant section to your site. You can ask friends or people you know in a similar industry for a back link or a reciprocal link (you link to them, they link to you) which is mutually beneficial.
You can also create blogs yourself on free services such as tumblr, blogger, wordpress.com etc and build your own back links.
Internal linking carries some weight as well, so in your content when you mention the phrase "landscape gardening" on your about us page, you can hyperlink that to the services section, etc.
Search engines put a lot of emphasis on links, more so than meta keywords and descriptions. Infact, Google doesn't pay much attention to meta information at all these days.
The best things you can do is write quality, unique content on your website, internal link it all up and build back links.
If you have a blog, write a piece of content for it every day for a month. If you want people to link to you naturally, you need to have unique content on your website/blog that either nobody else is doing or it's giving away professional information for free.
Share all your content to social networks and get it out there for people to see and share themselves. You never know who is going to see it and share it, which may result in a sale or new client or even going viral.
Consistency is also key, keep it up with the blog posts and build an audience/following for whatever your field of expertise is. Even if it's just a hobby, you can build a following if you give away value.
If you think you have nothing to talk about and you have no value to give, then you're wrong. There's always people out there, searching for information that you know more than they do.
Sticking to the gardening example, you might think that it's common sense to turn the soil over in your garden before planting new seeds (not sure if that's true just an example) but there could be thousands of searches a month on where to start or how to do it, which is where you can give away tips and guides on your blog, to be found by people like that.
If you want some insight in to what people are searching for, Google's keyword tool is your friend.
https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool
You could use this to search for terms and decide on a good subject to blog about based on the amount of traffic and monthly searches it receives. |
