What oil and filter?

I am changing the oil and filter this weekend yes I am perfectly capable.

Does it take 1.5L? Am I cheaper buying a 'kit' from ebay rather than the filter and oil alone?

It says in the Haynes when I scanned through you need to replace the washer on the drain plug or something along those lines where to buy?

look on wemoto as you'll be able to find the correct part for your vehicle,

Steady taking the cover off when doing a vara's oil filter it can spring out or may just sit there happily,

Careful not to pinch the O ring when re-fitting

can't remember how much oil it takes, I know it took more than we expected it to!

I won't bother replacing the O ring then just oil and filter.

Typically I use 1.5l in the Vara but it comes out again in about 1000 miles anyway.

I would suggest getting the sump washer.
