Presume that's for your XJ? I've seen a lot more, and a few less TBH, it's not a bad price. But, you could do it yourself in about an hour for about £50.

Yeah its the XJ, i would have done it myself but the cam chain is rattleing( i think its the cam chain) so that will be adjusted or the rattling stopped whatever it is.

If that's included in the price, then it's a good one. Depending on the bike, they can be a bit of a bugger, or they can be a piece of cake.

Mate that's a steal.

Come down where I went and you get quoted around £250 for a simple oil/filter change, spark plug change and air filter change Shocked

#1 You haven't listed it. Don't mistake "Yeah mate, yeah, no worries, we'll look at that" with what a mechanic will actually do.

#2 That's 2 hours of labour, which in practice means less than that. Don't expect miracles. Resetting the CCT shouldn't be a long job, but neither is it one that you want rushed by some trainee.

Thinking about it, a blanket assurance that they'll sort out an undiagnosed rattle as part of a basic service is, well, bullshit. You want someone who will tell you honestly that they'll have to diagnose it first and then quote you for sorting it out.

A lot of the items say 'check'. Checking items will be cheaper than adjusting/fixing items. They will charge you for their time (plus parts), the longer the job take, the more it will cost.

I think if you add the cam chain rattle, the quote will increase.

What do you think the quote is for, possibly 2 hours? Sounds cheap. They will probably add VAT, so keep that in mind.

There's about 5 hours of work there, remove and clean brake calipers? that'll take a a while. spark plugs are £5 each, so £20, oil and filter is £40(?) and £20 for an air filter?

I guarantee that 75% of all that won't get done though.

How do you get to 5 hours?
    Replace oil & filter - 20 minutes
Check fuel lines - presume visual, 15 seconds
Check throttle operation - 5 seconds
Check idle speed - 5 seconds
Check cooling system - 20 seconds
Check chain wear and adjustment - 10 seconds
Check brake fluid and top up - 1 minute
Check clutch fluid and top up - 1 minute
Check brake pad wear - 20 seconds
Check brake system - 30 seconds
Remove and clean brake calipers - don't know the bike well enough, but unless corroded surely only 30 minutes
Check light operation - 10 seconds
Check tyres for depth & condition - 5 seconds
    Check wheel bearings - presume it's visual/auditory 20 seconds
    Check suspension - 10 seconds
Check bodywork condition - 1 minute
    Road test - 10 minutes
Replace spark plugs - 5 minutes
Replace air filter - 5 minutes
Top to tail nut, bolt & fasteners check - 20 minutes if done properly

Not much over an hour, unless they hit problems. Can't see it taking any more than two hours.

Replace oil & filter - £30

Check throttle operation - twist it.
Check idle speed - idles about 1300rpm when warm? Leave it.
Check cooling system - XJ is oil cooled, is it leaking oil, nope, done.
Check chain wear and adjustment - simple, read the haynes.
Check brake fluid and top up - check sight glass.
Check clutch fluid and top up - Thats your oil....
Check brake pad wear - Have a look, 10 seconds.
Check brake system - Do they work? Work well?
Remove and clean brake calipers - Probably an hour or so.
Check light operation - Come on, can you not check lights?
Check tyres for depth & condition - Have a look, again.
Check wheel bearings - Get friend to hold bike, wiggle front wheel and back wheel.
Check suspension - bounce on rear, front brake and squish front forks. Any leaks or odd behaviour?
Check bodywork condition - In a service, really?
Road test - Paying for a jolly on your bike lol
Replace spark plugs - 10 minutes max, £20
Replace air filter - £10
Top to tail nut, bolt & fasteners check - Grab a socket and make sure they are all there and tight.

For £84+ price of parts.

Thinking

Obviously, they will find faults, its like Dyson's service, £30 for a full service, but you know full well they will point out some dangerous failure points, "wear and tear mate" etc...

Would rather do all of that myself.

The last time i took it in, he said he would sort it when i book a service, i have sent a lot of business his way with Chinese bikes.

I'm dropping the bike off at 9am and picking it back up at 1pm, if he sends all the time on it who knows.

Aye, so true, was presuming no problems. But even if they're buggered, it only takes a few minutes to drill them out... with the right tools Very Happy

Managed to get a pair of seized, completely rounded-out screws out in under ten minutes using a dremel to cut new faces and an impact thingy.

The cover now reads that my bike takes DOT O 3 BRAKE FLUID O now though.

Managed to remove the screws in my ancient Kwak's master cyl with a cordless drill set to about half torque. The clutch in the drill vibrates the screwdriver bit and undies the screw.

This was after days of WD40 and rude words...

Well if you add bills up in the same way as you have the time. Then if you run a garage you would soon be bust.

Like to see you change a air filter in 5 mins when you have to remove and replace the fuel tank......

£40 a hour is very cheap for garage labour. Most are more than that.

I bet that the bill in £200 or near enough when the bike is ready. Not including any cam chain work.

Want to come and watch Laughing Depends a hell of a lot on the bike of course, but
VT500 - unscrew cover change filter, screw back cover - about 2 to 3 minutes
GPX750 - seat off, tank off, change filter, put all back, about 5 minutes
VF750 - unscrew covers, unscrew filters, change, and screw back in - about 5 minutes, maybe slightly more as there's two of them
I can take the fuel tank all 4 of my bikes in less than 2 minutes. The only way it would take longer is if there's a problem with getting the fuel hose off. Why does it take you longer? Not taking the piss, honestly confused.

I had a mechanic that charged £30 an hour until recently. But you're right, that's not usual.

To remove my tank, you need to remove the steering damper bracket, which means unbolting the steering damper, the left fairing, removing the top radiator mounting bolt, then unbolting the tank from the front... then remove the rider seat.

The bracket is a pain... so much so I haven't refitted it yet, so I have a tank slap happy bike with no damper which was a safety recall back in 97 Laughing

Ah, I wouldn't expect anything less from you Paddy Laughing I suppose having to remove fairings would slow you down a fair bit, I haven't had to do that on any of my bikes, so forgot about that.

Hope you've added it to you bodge list Thumbs Up Ah, the joys of working on 80s bikes, I've come across bits of stupid designs, but nothing that would interfere with a service too much Laughing

Well on my Versys.
You have to remove the screen, to allow the removal of the 2 upper fairings ( 6 bolts each side) and then unscrew a couple of other panel screws. before you get to undo the tank retaining bolts.

Don't you just love manufactures who make simple tasks a PIA Laughing
