Afternoon all,

Being new to biking I was advised to invest in a suitable jacket to learn to ride in, being cheap I thought I would try to obtain a second hand one.

I managed to find a nice second hand leather jacket at a good price that fitted my measurements.

It's made by a company called BKS and I just wondered if anyone has any info regarding stuff made by them? The jacket is in great condition and fits me perfectly when sat in a riding position.

Inside the jacket it has the usual care instructions and also a made to measure tag, I just assumed it would be off the peg. I have looked on the BKS website and due to not having flash on my ipad it doesn't tell me an awful lot.

This is the jacket

The jacket is heavier then I thought they would be. It weights 5kg! It has very thick padding to shoulders and elbows and also has this fitted into the back

The jacket is in good condition with no tears or rips or anything and all the zips and press studs work fine. I will give it a little clean and it should be great.

So in a nutshell is this going to provide me with some half decent protection should I make a newbie error and as far as the brand goes, are they fairly decent?

Cheers

Grim

BKS used to be the premier made-to-measure outfit. Then Frank Thomas bought them and they're now the usual run of the mill cack.

When was this? As I don't think I can date the jacket but to me it's seems an older jacket even though its in great condition.

If it fits you reasonably well it looks an excellent buy, and will last you many years if you don't get too fat. Cool

There is a lot of crappy stuff about these days and some of it is expensive crap too.
Definitely worth looking at something like this that has been put away for a few years with little wear .

I took a chance on it without trying it on. I just read online reviews for how bike jackets should fit and it just happened to be the measurements I was looking for. Not bad for a £21 punt!

Looks like I will have to lay off the dohnuts if I want to keep wearing it for the next few years! Laughing

It's a common problem since they need to fit fairly snug, and we all tend to get more muscle or more belly sooner or later.
But it would still be worth what you paid for it in 5 years time and probably won't look much different.

Thanks for the replies. I was worried it might be a shoddy made that would disintegrate like jeans if I had an off.

If it weighs 5 kilos I'd say it's one of the original BKS items. It certainly doesn't look like your typical modern tat. The armour also looks very familiar to stuff I remember seeing on their old site. Thumbs Up

Bearing in mind a MTM one-piece was around at least a grand from them back then. That jacket was probably in the £400 range.

If I knew that I would have stuck a bid in on the trousers too, I would have never squashed into them though. I'd have been pouring tonnes of talcum powder down my legs to try and get them over my thighs! Hand

I have a bks jacket.

Much better quality and more well made than the comparable alpine stars, RST and Dainese my friends have in all our opinions Thumbs Up

Ah that's good then. I like the way it fits/feels, kind of more important to me then who made it I guess. I just think I have a soft spot for leather Laughing
