Lucky to get out of that in 1 piece - sorting out insurance should be interesting!

It's a bit vague about what actually happened but why would he have any insurance stuff to sort out? Neither him or his bike were harmed and it wasn't mentioned that the car driver was harmed. Obviously the car is fucked but surely that would be up to the drivers insurance to pay out for.

Bit of a fucktard in the comments section actually. Going on about how they should be prosecuted for overtaking on the double white lines. A collision has happened, no kittens were harmed as far as I can tell so I see no reason for a prosecution to be honest. Just another one of these "what if" losers.

Thats your assumption.
The bike could have been overtaking the Ka, when the Ka went to overtake the van thus forcing the bike onto the verge.

Seems a bit more plausible than a bike overtaking a car that is overtaking a van.

Shereen fail IMO

Do I detect some butthurt about not spotting that it all happened on a big stretch of double solid white lines? Laughing

Actually, I wonder if the insurers will take the position that every fucker is at fault and can sort themselves out. Thinking

had this happen to me one a few occasions, the pricks dont check their mirrors before pulling out,it wakes you up when it happens as you are passing a a que of traffic - car pulls out at sub 30 while you your doing 60+ past the line of cars.

What the fuck is wrong with you cansa? There is clearly double whites so neither should have been overtaking, whichever way it occurred.

Yeah, cos you have never done anything that you're not allowed to do.... Rolling Eyes

The questions really should be
"Why are there double white lines on a long straight bit of road?"
"Why didnt the Ka driver check his blind spot before overtaking?" (i assuming that he didnt and forced the overtaking biker to the verge)
"Was the Ka trying to race the biker?"

The double whites don't extend very far in either direction.

I haven't actually done the necessary thinking to ascertain whether it's actually possible the overtake could have been legally completed if not for the wild car backflip though.

you are all still missing the question you should be asking, why did the ka driver loose control, this would not have been reported, were the double whites there for a hidden dip that suprised the driver and rider when a car appeared in front of them.

there had to be something to cause the loss of control from the car driver, from the google link posted earlier there are a couple of junstions that car may have pulled out from thinking, it double white dont need to check that way only to be faced with a car and bike coming at them - the report is has precious little information in it, i very much doubt we will ever know exactly what happen, specially as each persons story will be different

Probably shat himself when he saw the biker.

Happened to me twice on the motorway on the way to Spain. I anticipated both cars and slowed enough. The cars started pulling in to my lane, spotted me, and snapped back sharpish. They wiggled around a fair bit doing so. In the hands of an inexperienced driver, it's easy to see how they could panic, give it too much and lose control.

A look at Google Street View and the satellite pics shows that the double solids don't extend very far in either direction. The car is on its roof just before the house - but I'm betting it took a while to get there while it was rolling.

There's no information as to where the overtake actually took place. Only where the car and bike came to rest.

Maybe they were trying to avoid a kitten that was on its way to rescue burning puppies from a nearly orphanage.

As above, sounds likely the car lost control because he was surprised to find a bike already overtaking and panicked.

It's not illegal to overtake on double white/solid lines.

That is not the 'reason' for white lines and the commenter is just showing his ignorance.

You are not allowed to cross them in most situations, but you're still fine overtaking when they are there.
Of course, this makes it much more likely the car was breaking the law, but quite possible the bike wasn't.

It took a good bit of riding behind me, then sitting right up my backside to the point I waved him past a few times before the undercover cop bike filmed me actually crossing double whites (in a safe position with excellent visibility.)

Not sure if serious...

So just in case you are:

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 26

You're ASSUMING the events, and then ASSUMING they were not legal.

Sold white liens and double whites do NOT mean no overtaking, simply, do not cross.

If you can overtake without breaking the line, ,go for it.

He's being quite serious. Nothing you quoted precludes overtaking.

Crossing the white lines is the problem, not overtaking.

Both being stupidly impatient as it's easy to overtake safely on that road unless traffic is very heavy.
The car is worst as they would gain so little before coming to queues on the outskirts of Whitby a mile ahead - and they are local so should know the road well enough.

Note it's a long steepish downhill so even 'slow' vehicles can usually manage 60mph.
There are numerous side roads down there which can catch out the ambitious speedfreak, it's best to just enjoy the view out to sea as you approach the town and cruise.
