A random thought I had the other day after coming across my local motorcycle training place. The access road is naff, it's basically a hole filled with gravel.

Has anyone ever had to have a (tarmac, concrete, brick or other suitable actual surface) road built for home access or similar?

Say you owned a few acres and you want to build an access road to a barn or whatever on it. I assume planning permission to join to the highway is a bit of an issue, but excluding that, how much does it actually cost to build half a mile of tarmac? I have no idea. Five figures?

Tried to google but nothing really. I'm not actually thinking of doing this (except in the country manor dream), it's a curiosity.

I'll do it for 250 quid, a caravan and a dag...

Getting tarmac laid is super expensive, I was over £900 to get a 2 metre x 1.5 metre extension put onto my driveway.

I designed and supervised a new road in a park a few months ago. I should only have supervised but there were no drawings at all when it was given to me to sort out.

It's an open block type so no gulleys required, water runs through the blocks and then through the graded fill underneath. It was to prevent the park getting wrecked by HGVs when they set up events.

That looks awfully like Victoria Park, which is just over the canal from my back garden.

That's the jobbie. You must have seen one of my other jobs from a few years ago, Cadogan Terrace then. I was asked how much to remove a footway to increase parking and I jokingly said it would be cheaper to raise the road than lower the stats..

That road is ridiculous. Regularly gets gridlocked on busy days; there's too much parking on it as is. Combine that with the large undulations in its surface, and the speed bumps, and it's a road I avoid all the time, even if it means taking the A12 / Fish Island or going around the park via Grove Road.

Have another look, I fixed it, no more grid lock, no more undulations. passing places and shared surface now.
