Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You're lucky Krad isn't here or he'd have gone on at you for abusing the term "Engineer", since Engineering doesn't really involve duct tape or WD40. Those people are called "repair men", or "kinky slvts".

I'm an 'enginner' or 'the guy that fixes our stuff'.

I usually carry a screw driver and a can of WD40.

Occasional get the laptop out.

Easy.

As an engineer you should know it's far safer to carry them in your van. Wink

To become a Engineer in the Charactered Engineer sense you don't actually need a degree. There's a degree pathway, but it's not the only route. A Ph.D is probably a more worthwhile use of time, IMO.

Confused You need a degree to do a Ph.D.

As long as he's using the tape to hold the WD40 in place he should be ok.

You, but I never said you didn't. I said you don't need a degree to become a Chartered Engineer.

I'm an engineer. Finish me BEng next year then I might do the MEng. Not sure yet about CEng-ing myself up I might not bother, although becoming an Engineer is tempting.

Most of the work in getting CEng is doing the industrial experience and continued professional development. Having an MEng requires 5 years IIRC industrial experience instead of 8, though if you went into industry after doing an NVQ you could still get your CEng faster than someone who did their MEng. This does make sense because CEng is not an academic qualification, even though lecturers at unis seem intent on convincing people otherwise.

Obviously there is debate about what an Engineer is, though personally I think it's pretty obvious. Someone who uses theoretical knowledge to design solutions to non-trivial physical problems.

Well I'm running a lab and in charge of 4 other engineers at the moment, so with the BEng I expect I could pass the CEng trials if I wanted. I'm thinking I might go for MEng anyway though just cos I fancy it (so long as work pays for it of course Very Happy ).

You have to have been working at masters level for 5 years after you got your MEng, or 8 years after you got your NVQ. If they're paying, why not? Wink
