I'm sat here having a relax, watching TV and browsing the net and I keep on getting whiffs of pear drops. Beats the dog smell or the cheap Lemon air freshener, just don't know where it is coming from.

Are you diabetic? Ketones have a smell of pear drops or it could be amyl acetate which is a decomposition by-product (fungus/fermenting/decomposing fruit type).

Can be a symptom of diabetes. Ketoacidosis. You should probably get yourself checked. Can be serious, obviously, not a source of humour so I hope no more jokes about this boys and girls

Just sayin'

Not really related, but sometimes I get quite a clear taste of cigarette in my mouth. I'm convinced it's part of the cleansing process, like after a few months of having had a cig, some deep-rooted bit of lodged chemical is finally removed and does the rounds in my circulatory system so I can taste it one last time before it goes through my kidneys or whatever. Not that I'm a smoker at all - haven't touched one for aaaaaaaaages! - but I do get this sudden taste of it sometimes after having not had one for a long while.

When did you last have pear drops? Laughing

edit: Just seen the Diabetes/Ketoacidosis posts above Embarassed ... Don't have any more pear drops!

'Ang on..... In your leaky bum thread you've mentioned eating a load of eggs. Ketosis smells like pear drops and can occur if a diet is heavy in protein.

PS are you going to post more intimate details of others parts of your anatomy? I just want to be prepared, that's all.....

Pass the popcorn

Is someone painting a car in their lock up?

Cellulose paint smells like pear drops.

Oh Bugger, I have changed my diet somewhat cutting out fizzy drinks almost completely, cutting out bread, gone from a loaf a day to nothing, Haven't had chocolate for at least two weeks, used to have at least 200g a day or more. Turned to eating bacon instead of snacking biscuits/butties/coco pops.

I will pop down the drop in centre in the morning. although I did get tested last year for diabetes and was all ok.

I in no way intend to scare you, but I'll point you towards this.
https://www.rnib.org.uk/eyehealth/eyeconditions/eyeconditionsdn/Pages/diabetes.aspx#H2Heading3

Obviously depends on the regularity and severity - I mean we all get blurred vision for one reason or another at various times - so I don't mean to alarm you. As you say, best head over to one of the drop-in clinics to see what they say. Probably nothing though. My bro worked with a bloke who had diabetes and he said it's actually very hard to give it to yourself. It just depends on how long you on the diet of bread by the loaf - that is quite a large amount of bread..!

(Also depend on exercise levels etc too - full loaf is fine if you're burning it off, but if you're a a fairly static person then it's a gigantic amount of extra carbs and sugar and could play havoc with your insulin/glycogen balance, which is the thing that fucks up if you are diabetic)

Like I said I will get checked out in the morning at the drop in centre. It may be because of the dramatic change in diet, I did drink 2 lt of fresh orange juice yesterday, couldn't seem to get enough of it and I have been drinking lots of water, more than the amount of pop that it has replaced.

I did think the pear drop thing was funny at first......... now not so.

Lay off the fruit juice until you are tested. Do you know any diabetics that have a kit and will test your blood? Some chemists (Lloyds, maybe others) will test for you without a referral. With luck it will not be diabetes just gayness.

The strange urge/satisfaction with the orange juice may have been because of the imbalance I'm talking about. I can't remember which hormone does what (insulin or glycogen), but one may be out of balance, so your body may be telling you it needs sugar, even though it doesn't. Hence the craving for the orange juice.

Quite possibly is just because of the change in diet though. Same thing happens to anyone who's been eating carb-heavy for a while. Their body gets used to being in a sugar-loaded state. It leads to poor daily energy and cravings for stodgy food, and sweet drinks. Just need to be weaned off of it. Thumbs Up

No they don't.

The source of Pear drop odour is Butyl Acetate, which is an ESTER not a ketone.

It's acetone that smells of fruit on a diabetics breath and that's a simple ketone. It's formed as a decomposition product from acetoacetic acid.

Acetone smells nothing like fruit.

I used to work in the lab of a solvents plant. I can differentiate the odours in paint thinners. In a mixture I can discern the following:

Methanol
Ethanol
Isopropyl Alcohol
n-butanol
Acetone
Methyl Ethyl Ketone
Methyl Isobutyl ketone
Ethyl Acetate
Butyl Acetate
Benzene
Toluene
Xylene
A180, a.k.a. White Spirit

Pear drops are flavoured by an ester (ethyl ethanoate if my memory serves me correctly).

Acetone is not the only ketone produced in diabetes, there are many. Beta hydroxy butyrate springs to mind. The combination of all of these could well be reminiscant of the odour of pear drops.

Dairy cows fairly commonly suffer from a similar problem (but due to very low blood sugar rather than an inability to utilise blood sugar). Farmers often report a sweet smell on the cows breath and when it urinates.

It's serving you incorrectly.

It's Butyl Ethanoate/acetate.

Stinkwheel's answer is more complete but it is ketones that produce the odour on a diabetic's breath.

Doesn't change the fact that the source of Pear drop odour is an ESTER, not a ketone.

I'm worried, as i get none of these symptoms and i'm diabtetic and have been since the age of 6. Laughing

I get all sorts of weird sensations though like burning nostrils or tingling ears, become very weak but vision isn't really affected.

Type 1 or Type 2? Not sure if there's a difference in the symptoms, but maybe? Also, I presume you have all the insulin injections and all that so maybe it's kept under control?

Every had one of those diabetic fits where you miss an injection, your sugar levels go berserk and you get hospitalised? (Not that I know anything about it, I'm just curious)

Or is it the 'basic' form where you just have to watch your diet and everything stays hunky-dory?
