I'm looking to get a new bike now that my TA has been sold.

Found a couple that I like the look of and price is low. The issue on both is CAT D.

What are the general thoughts on buying a CAT D bike and, in particular, selling-on at a later date?

CAT-D Is when it's written off due to other circumstances affecting cost other than the repair.

So repair is less than value of bike with new parts, but it may be that the cost of a hire vehicle is too expensive for the duration of repair etc.

CAT D Should only be very light damage, often, stolen, recovered and attempted thefts end up cat d

No, because I couldn't be bothered with the same hassle should I ever sell it.

But that's the beauty of it - you do get less when you sell it but then you pay less when you buy it. if you run it into the ground they won't even check the category anyway due to the low value, so buy a cheap cat d and treat it like a whore.

I thought if you bought a written off bike and got it back to being fully registered and roadworthy, you didn't even need to mention it to the next buyer - 'buyer beware' and all that.

When I bought my GN125 from Lancashire's best known rogue trader Vince Candelin, I had no idea it was a previous write-off until several months later when I was in my crash and the damage valuation was bumped down because on record it had been crashed and written off once before, cat-C I think.

So regarding the selling on, it's only an issue if the buyer does all the detailed background checks and finds out, which I think most don't do as they take it by looks and feel alone, rather than the history - at least that's what I did Embarassed . So when you sell it, as far as anyone else is concerned you had no idea it was a previous write off. Think it's just a matter of concsience really.

Could be wrong, but that's the thought process I would take if I were in your position. Thumbs Up

What you say is true, the only thing obliging you to inform the new owner is your own conscience.

The Tuono I had was a Cat C. It allowed me to buy a bike that would of been well out of my budget. I got it for £1550 (when they were going for £3k+ at the time) and sold it back on no problem for the same amount.

I was very clear it was a Cat C as was the seller who I bought it off.

No problems at all Thumbs Up

I'd not even bat an eyelid at a Cat D, Cat C would make me have a bit of a look over it but I'd probably buy it.

Cat B however.. I'd check for some actual fixed stuff before considering.

Yes legally you do have to inform people it's a cat write off legally:

If the car was a write off you can only ask for your money back if the seller misled you. For example, they told you the car had never been in an accident or they withheld this information when you asked about the car’s history.

I always HPI check a vehicle to ensure I know what I'm buying.

Cat writes offs easily knock off 50% of the value so sometimes there are bargains to be had[/i]

This only applies to trade sales. Private sellers do not have to say anything.

IMO, the fact you have to ask, means that the person buying from you would be equally put on edge.

If it's a good bike that's well repaired and you're going to keep it for long enough that it's appreciable value is little anyway I'd say go for it. Otherwise you've got to consider that your marketplace when you come to sell it is quite a bit restricted.

I'd like to say that it doesn't bother me at all, because it's a cynical insurance wheeze to limit their pay outs. There's no reason at all why a properly repaired write off of any category wouldn't ride and therefore be worth as much as a minter.

In practice though, they have successfully brainwashed enough people into believing that write offs are worth less that they are worth less. Mad

Depends entirely on the likely price at the intended time of selling it on though. Under a grand, no bother, I haven't checked any of my previous bikes. Up to £2K or so, tens of quids. Above that, I'd likely HPI then look elsewhere to avoid the hassle. Sad

As to telling the buyer, caveat emptor - and I feel there's a certain moral high ground in not colluding with the insurers' scam. If you're going to lie then "I don't know" is safer than "No", because how are they going to prove to the contrary? That's also why asking a seller straight out isn't likely to offer you much protection, because if they've got half the wit they were born with then "don't know" will be their answer too.

tl;dr - depends.
