In a previous thread i was looking at a fine tdm for a good price, got there again and, he has upped the price! (allways get it in writeing) and lowered the offer for mine! and what more seemed to think he said the same before Shocked i know i've not lost my hairy mind because a friend and my girlfriend were there to hear the same...

Bizzare, but as per instruction he will probably have stuck it where the sun don't shine.

I'd seen a transalp at the shop i got my bike and the one before from, they don't mess about, they dont have anything to do with iffy bikes and if its not what i want i can take it back... sounds allright to me Smile

https://www.serfozo.ch/images/cimg0166.jpg

I just sorta want it all out of the way if you know what i mean, according to a mate somebody else had a test ride on it Shocked Not helping my impatience sense Neutral

Big trialies, cool or pants?

£1500, 36k and from what i can see (it was between a long row of bikes) its in very good condition, dosen't loks like its been dropped, the spokes are in great condition, no bolts seem to have been buchered, tyres are brand spanking new, the mono shock is not rotting away either... will be happyer once ive had a listen to the engine and had a go Smile

The tyres are avon gripsters, sort of offroadish tyres, so will be going allong some of the joke roads (barely roads, more like greenlanes but with lumps of tarmac inbetween) to see how it fairs... hmmm maybe i'll get some crashbars first Razz

That looks like a pretty decent example there mate.

I'm thinking about selling the CBR early next year to get me a big trailey bike and the transalp is supposed to be one of the best allrounders going, it apparently can be quite boring though with a very bland power delivery but I suppose it depends on what you want to do with it as to whether that will matter or not.

Its mine, mwahahahaha! Sitting in the garrage now!

First thoughs...

Oh for the love of god what have i done! - Its tall, and i'm not, after the intial shock i was ok with it, remember thinking the same with my cx, and after about 5 miles got used to it.

Power After getting the hang of where the gear shift is i tryed an over take, up hill, good view no problem, one i'd never dream of on my previous bike and belted past like it was nothing, hurrah!

Sounds Engine sounds like a quiet 4strk trials bike... 3valve engine, sounds gooood though, not smooth as i thought it would sound, which again is good... there are clunks and whirs that i dont recognise which are a bit freeky but another alien things about a new bike i guess... (and the addition of chain drive)

Handleing Allot better than i'm used to, the breaking is very much better, the bike keeps a steady line, going arorund corners it goes where you point it withought decideing to go somewhere else... Low speed hadleing, appart from the reach to get the floor the steering lock is un-believeable, when i'm brave enough for it i'm sure turning arround in no less space than a wheelie bin is possible.. maybe...

Overall its weird, in a good way, the view is like being in a land rover (at least taller than the average pedestrian) the power is not too much, enough to keep me entertained Smile the handleing is odd because of the height but very controlled. I'm going to be off finding the madest roads i can as soon as i get chance Cool

Hints 'n tips for riding your first big tailie.

Get used to the front end dive under heavy braking, it can be offputting to start with until you learn to go with the flow.

Standing up on the pegs is useful. This allows you to see over the top of transit vans and hedges for more overtaking possibilities and general observation.

Go easy with the back brake, it is very easy to lock the back wheel under heavy braking, even without using the brake due to the front diving. Don't worry about it if you do, the clattering is normal. You know you have got the hang of it when you get a thump on releasing the front brake which indicates a rolling stoppie just took place without you noticing.

Keep your chain slightly on the loose side, the combination of torque and large swingarm movement gives them a hammering.

Your handlebars should now pass over the top of car wing mirrors. NOT transit vans though!

Something to practice very carefully is using the front brake round corners. Under power whilst cornering try gently applying the front brake with one or two fingers, you should find that this makes the front end dip and shortens the wheelbase causing the bike to tuck-in and tighten up your line. This has got me out of trouble several times but ONLY works with big trailies!

Countersteer with extreme predjudice.

Edit: Move about on the saddle a lot, it is that shape for a reason. Coming into sharp corners you want to be sitting up almost on the tank, then if anything is going to break away it will be the back tyre.

Sticking your elbows out makes it easier to go round corners...don't ask me why because I don't know.

Thanks stinkywheel... thats going to be helpfull Smile the lofy view is amazeing though.
anyways getting used to it ....all in good time, the cx was a bloody handfull the first week or so being used to a cg! but i could flick that thing about when i felt like it.

Ive not been that freaked out by a bike since haveing a go on my mates zxr400!

First thing i'm getting (come on, me not puting on bizzare accesories, what were they thinking?) Is a set of crash bars, then i'm heading straight for a couple of derbys crapest roads/green lanes. (incidentaly does anyone know any good , mild, greenlanes in derby?)
Second is some tiny fog lights to go on my forks (front light not turning with bars is freaking me out allready)

Apparently the front forks can be dropped 3cm with no ill effect, and the rear can be set softer lowering the back quite a bit, will see how it goes, mounting is quite a tricky procedure, with stuff on the rack my leg gets caught on it, i'l just need to park nearer to kerbs Razz

And incidentaly the mirrors are shat, seem to be concave so you get less of a view... are all honda mirrors standard thread? these will have to go i think (or something like a convex trailer parking mirror thing stuck on the bottom)

I put GPZ305 mirrors on my MZ. They are rectangular, sit just inboard of the bar ends (so shouldn't break) and give a good view.

To get on, stand to the right of the bike some distance away. Now kind of hop towards the bike and similtaneously swing your left leg up so the underside of your lower leg rests on the seat. Now slide your leg over the top of the saddle, at the same time pull the bike off its stand towards you and put your weight on it as your thigh comes on to the saddle. You are now on it.

Here is my bike with the GPZ mirrors on (and my CIBIE lights, you will fast get used to fixed position lights)

Zero you lucky bugger! Lovely choice in bike, so treat it well. Smile Can imagine travelling on one, would eat the miles up, might look into one myself. Thumbs Up

Questions.
Whats the pull power like? (Cant beat the bottom end grunt of a big trailie. Twisted Evil ) What sort of speeds are they capable of? Can they wheelie? Laughing

I love the big trail bikes, favorite of all time, xtz750 or africa twin, bully boys bikes, just barge the smaller bikes out the way.
Dead comfy and you have a wicked view over hedges and cars.
Looks like you picked up a minty honda there Very Happy

Its in the shop now >sniff< Crying or Very sad But got More or less what i payed for it, put nearly 10,000 miles on, so think i did bloody well... might well get another when ihave the money as a spare and disance bike, i do miss it allready, but then also miss the cg... Thats progress i guess...

It will make somebody a very nice bike... when the bores/rings, clutch, clutch o-ring and various other bits have been done.

Stinky (being called stinky all the time can't be doing allot for your self esteem?) - Those lights look fierce! I remember reading that mz's have quite powerfull alternators, any powering problems ever? Xenon lights are a little steep for me at the moment (£200!!) a couple of spots and fogs might be in order for mine, will have to see, no more homemade fog shrouds though (old pc case + metal cutters = classy)

I'll have a god getting on from the right Very Happy it makes more sense really as the stand wont stop you leaning it and if you let go its got a chance of staying up...

I'll see how i get allong with the mirrors for a bit... the cx's mirrors were 1.25 metric i think, dont suppose anyone knows what newer hondas are?

Must resist urge to go to shops the scenic route (via matlock bath Twisted Evil )

xtz750 or africa twin
Guess what engine fits in the frame Twisted Evil The TA is a mini africa twin, i'd have love on of those, thats what got me looking at thisun... though it is more offroad aimed (though you have to be bloody mad to try it, pritty heavy)

NS kieth - Not even thought of wheelying yet Razz defenately felt the front lifting at certain points being clumsy with the uber light clutch (compared to what i'm used to) apparently it will stoppie nicely with uprated springs and brakes, as for power, Its not sports 600 but that not what they are about, certainly enough to blast past lorrys on twisties (at last).

You could stop being so American and just type stinkwheel. I don't see why our colonial neighbours feel the need to shorten everyones name to the minimum possible length then add a letter 'y'. It is over-familiar and babyish and is one of the many things that annoy me about Americans which people in this country are doing more and more. What is worse, they cannot abbreviate my real name so they just add a Y to the end. Anyone calling me Scotty can expect a slap in the mouth, especially if they have an annoying, nasal New-York accent.

Ahem, sorry about that. Wink

It is the same as a Yamaha XTZ alternator. It worried me slightly so I stopped running 2x100w and moved down to a 55w and a 100w. They are Cibie projector spots, single filament halogen bulbs and cost £35 for the pair off fleabay. I have replaced the tail and position lights with LEDs to cut down on the alternator loading.

You know it would worry me to go to america incase i came back with an accent. Condsider myself corrected! its from when you were called stinkywheelie, stuck in my brain you see... on a related note, the most annoying accent is japanese people speeking american, its truely horrible...

I think the alternator output on the ta is 310watts @ 5000rpm

Wont be pushing the electrical system, just a little extra will do Smile

With them being halogen, they are allot brighter than a "normal" 55w/100w spot light? after crash bars and what not i'll start looking, something small to sit on the forks, light enough to be jubilee cliped onto the forks... or on the bars depending..

Most spots these days have halogen bulbs but they are usually have crappy H3 bulbs which aren't all that good (my oppinion). The main thing with the spots I have is that they normally retail at 80 quid each rather than 16 quid per pair. The reflectors in them are a work of art and have minimal scatter, hence you get much more useful light. They look like those 'angel eye' lights when they are on with a central beam and a 'ring' of light round them.

They make rally lighting dont they? they sound great, bit big for what i was planing tough.. yeh my fogs had/have H3 bulbs in, they were excelent, but (obviously because they're fogs) didn't light up much further than dipped beam, still were worth it though...

I'm gonna stick with it for a bit and see, it would be daft of me to run arround buying mods before i know what really needs changeing... oh yeh, wile i'm contradicting myself, is there much problem moveing the gear selector pedal angle down? would it put any undue stress on anything? its not where i'm used to it being, i keep misssing it or slipping off i do have to sort of reach for it a bit...

Lighting wise...
Ideally i'd have

https://www.hobbyfahrer.de/Bilder/Technik/BMW_R1150GS_Xenon_Halter.jpg

https://www.touratech.de/shop_uk/media/01-040-1503-01.jpg

Bit rich for me though....

Anyways, its on my list of things to do Very Happy

Crash guards are top of the list, i NEARLY dropped it this morning, parked on a downward slope, get off the "normal" way, stand slides allong the floor then folds back in! Shocked FFFF******ck! Kept it up though, won't be doing that again! I never had a problem getitng the FAR heavyer cx on its centerstand, the TA is a little bit more of a challenge, getting there though... (theres no place to stand on the stand to lever it up, but a neat handle to pull on)

Untill then the plastics are a liability!
