PostPosted: 15:12 - 03 Aug 2013    Post subject: Triumph Bonneville America auxiliary light kit Reply with quote

Hi, new here and just after a quick bit of advice. As in the title my bike has a light kit on. I was wondering whether these lights are allowed to be on when generally riding around. I have wanted to be noticable to the sadly ignorant car drivers in my town but because these lights dont have a high beam\low beam setting I am unsure whether they will be too bright for other road users. Dont fancy being pulled over by the police so thought I would ask you guys for you valued opinions.

Many thanks
Kerrie

?? This is the help you get on these forums. Im not thick im simply asking because when I turn my lights on they are of the same similar brightness as my main light on full beam and you cant ride around normally with full beam on.
Being my first time on this forum I can clearly see I wont be asking for help here again. Sorry to the nice people on here

There is idiots about all over the place.

Unfortunatly i do not know the answer to your question but would be interested to find out as this si the type of bike i am looking for off my pension money.

I would tend to just use the lights til you get pulled over as it is better to be noticed.

I would also suggest you would probably be best to check out the triumph forum too as they tend to be a bit more human than some of the dicks in here. As seen by the arses reply to you get again. If they cant be helpful they should just shut up.

I drift in and out of this forum wondering what i actually get from it and this idiots response tells me what i need to know. I refuse to drag my knuckles along the ground like these ignorant folk do.

There are good and helpfull people in here, unfortunatly their impact is diluted by the numpties.

So i will now bow out from the forum for good this time as i do not want to associate with these types - for me it just typifies what people unfortunatly think about bikers.

See you on the triumph forum some time - best out of here.

Just ask a friend or family to go out with you in their car and doing a few run-bys of each other.

If they're looking close to the brightness of your main beams though would of thought they've got potential to be dazzling like over-done HID lights etc.

Ahh I know you!

I'm Kate's (peepo?) other half.
She's learning to ride on the Van Van now, I knew you had an America but how come I've never seen it around?

If the lamps are fitted correctly they will not dazzle oncoming users, they can be used in the daytime without any problems. They are really simple to focus if you think the aim is out, just undo the bolt on the side of the lamps and tilt them downwards.

Most likely will be equivalent to full beam and shouldn't be used on dip.

You could always stick some side light bulbs in each one - even compared to a dip beam it will be less blinding and make it easier for people to judge your vector and position.

They are fine on dip as long as they are correctly aligned.
They are simply plugged into the loom and work off the standard light switch. There is a switch on one of the lamps that allows the rider to turn them off, overriding the headlight switch.

I'm pretty sure they use 35w bulbs.

But if they have a generic round pattern, rather than one flattened off as required for a dip beam, presumably will have to angle them down significantly?

I'd say defensive riding would be far far more important and useful than simply dazzling other drivers into submission with extra lighting.

Bear in mind that extra lights can prevent drivers from judging your speed and distance. All they see is a ball of light rather than the motorcycle, and the might even think it is a car coming, but very far away.

I'd say extra lights to improve your visibility to other road users is extremely ill advised.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

They are wired to come on with high beam so they cannot be used as running lights. Also as spotlights they can only be used with high beam on, anything else iirc is an MOT fail.

Chances are the generator doesn't produce enough power to run then continuously, if it does exchange them for a set of bates mini's with high and low.

Nope, they have continuous power. I forgot I don't have an on/off switch for the lights, just hi/lo. Triumph have the auxiliary circuit switched from the ignition. It appears to rely on the rider to flick the switch on the left hand lamp to turn them on and off.

The output is around 23-25a. Should be plenty left over for 70w lamps. Obviously if you sit around on low revs you might get problems.
