Anyone do it ? I find myself doing it a lot recently and wondered if its the right thing to do or should I concentrate on the conventional way of stopping. I only use it in conjunction with normal braking when coming up to lights or junctions.

I think you should just be pleased that you have spelt brake correctly in this context. I'm giving you karma for this rare treat....

I do it so much my brake pads don't wear out between ice ages.

Remember though that sometimes a brake light is a nice thing to show the plum driving right up your chuff, this then panics them into dropping back (usually). You can show a brake light on most bikes without actually activating the brakes properly.

Depends, if I'm out for a bimble then yes I'll use engine braking more. If I'm riding in the spirited fashion I'll use it less.

That's a fair point about the brake lights and the numptys that love to tailgate.

Someone once told me I shouldn't engine brake as it'll stretch the chain. Rolling Eyes

I think his mind was changed when i asked how much worse was engine braking than going 0-100 in a few seconds.

In my view this is good practice. I ride with a couple of guys and that is all the do.... engine brake. Sometimes you come up to a corner and think they are just going to flow around it, you set yourself up to do the same, but then find that they are still in the middle of the bend when they should have been out of it, no warning that they have used engine braking, but if they had just tapped the brake light on I would have known and slowed down myself that but earlier.

In the mid 90s I entered the Cambrian Rally on my DR350. Unfortunately I damaged it the day before trail riding on a welsh green lane.

A Norfolk bike shop who had a stall at the start line lent me a CRM250 for the rally about 30 minutes before the start.

It was when I was plummeting down near vertical slippery mud covered slopes that I realised how nice a DR350 in first gear is with its lovely engine braking, because two strokes have bugger all of it.

I only use the brake levers if I really have to, if you're in a low enough gear you can control acceleration and deceleration entirely with the throttle, especially on a big bike. As for tail-gaters, a bike rapidly slowing without a brake light tends ro scare the shit out of them and make them back off, though this should be considered an advanced riding technique and generally avoided until you've got a few tens of thousands of miles experience.

I use engine braking most of the time tbh but, like others have suggested, if there's someone behind me, I'll just give the front brake lever a couple of taps. Enough to engage the brake light but, not the brakes, as I got rear ended once (although I was stationary and had the brake light engaged at the time) and it wasn't very nice at all Sad
