When a vehicle is indicating to turn into the junction you're waiting to come out of, what would be the correct (i.e. DSA-approved) thing to do?

Would you either A. Wait for the car to start turning before taking off, or B. Take off if you assume the car is going to turn (i.e. slowing down)

My instructor told me that it was undue hesitation by not pulling out when a car was indicating and slowing down, but I argued that I thought I should wait to make sure it actually does turn into the junction and not realise at the last minute it was a mistake (and that it wanted to turn into the next junction, or was indicating by mistake) and hit me side on.

Which would be correct?

Thanks for clearing this up!

I was told by my driving instructor to wait until the car has turned into the road and making sure there are no other cars behind that one following too close behind ready for you to plough in to.

Personally i generally wait until it seems to be significantly slowing down, unless its come into sight at excess speed in which case it might just be slowing as its realised its going to fast for the oncoming junction Laughing - generally because in some instances like if there is medium amount of traffic i'll also look the opposite way before pulling out in case the traffics coming to a slow/stop and thats slowing the car down/plus accidental indicating being the reason.

No idea on the DAS approved version of that though, just how i do it Confused

This is what I would do to be honest, best to be safe than sorry and in an accident.

Was told by my instructor to wait till they have committed to the turn. If they are a decent distance away though just go for it I'd say.

yer instructor is a prick .......like my first instructor if that was the best advice he could give you!!! yes say it like it is ...... ......You don't pull out until you know for absolutely certain the bugger is committed to his turn . Believe me I see this where I live every damned day specially where there are a couple of junctions in close proximity .

AND watch for the impatient bastard that is right up his arse and who will whizz past as soon as he thinks there is enough room .. and twat straight up your arse ..... Know of two girls who that happened to .Be Safe treat all junctions as kill zones .. you are the prey and them bastards are out to get yer ............Look at the car try and see though its windows or round it or under it for any sign there is another one close behind . look in shop window reflections or for shadows , anything that will help you get more information of what is there and how fast its going ....... The end of my road is partially obscured and usually cars are parked right up to the junction and its on a slight curve too...... so every time it leaves me emerging from a concealed junction ,,,,,,so look and keep on looking... till you KNOW FOR CERTAIN its safe ...... and stay alive ....

Years ago (in the car) I had someone indicating and slowing considerably so I pulled out. We almost hit (cue me trying to get out of the way wondering what the retard was doing, and them pulling up on the corner to drop someone off). Would have been my fault if we hit.

Waited for them to start turning since.

I did have a bit of a "discussion" over something similar with my bike instructor last year (though this time I was unsighted, he still expected me to go using the van blocking my view as cover and he said my explained reasoning was bollocks) but told him I'd do things in those types of situations my way and that was that.

Stay safe.

Wait ofcorse. "Assuming" isn't really a sure thing is it, how do you know that some dumb wench hasn't forgot to switch her indicator off. I'd rather stay alive rather then smash the throttle just coz the guy behind me wants to get to the bookies on time.

Watch out for the indicators left on/put on by mistakes. I would stop and wait, a bike or a car might coming whizzing through the gap.

I wait until I can see that it's definitely going to turn. My sister pulled out on a car that was indicating (into the road she was coming out of) and it subsequently ploughed straight into the side of her car.
Never completely trust those orange flashing lights!

My nearest miss to date was with a chap on an ER6f who was giving a misleading indication.

Ignore the blinking things.

I always wait, even if he's flashing me out. I want to see those wheels turn AND what might be lurking close behind him!

This is the best answer. Hesitation could be an indication that you have ignored other signs. Has the vehicle slowed? Have the wheels started turning? Has the drivers body movement suggested preparedness to turn? Does the driver appear aware of their surrounding? There are far more signs than a flashing light. You should also consider the speed that you are able to leave the junction and the distance to the vehicle. It's all about observation and awareness of your environment.

Do you then wait to see what is behind them? Then wait to see what is behind them? Then wait to see what is behind them.....................?

Your position on the road should give as good a view as possible. Your view is generally higher, and more open, than most cars and you should be looking over and around.

Wait, if someone you're about to do involves 'assumption' of what a car is going to do it's best avoided

Wait until absolutely sure. Few years ago in the car I pulled out of junction in front of left indicating and slowing land cruiser which promptly t boned me. Stupid bitch driving it admitted she was slowing and indicating to pull into bus stop just after the junction! Of course, all this denied to insurers Evil or Very Mad Shudder to think of consequences if on a bike.

I've had it a few times where someone has indicated and I've thought they were pulling into a junction that I was sitting at only to realise there was a layby or similar just after the junction... so I always wait to be sure.

And YES I have failed a driving test for undue hesitation
