xj 600 running issues below 5k rpm

coming back from a long motorway trip i filled up at m20 j11 services with £6 of their finest unleaded and carried on to dover, got near the docks pulled off the traffic lights and i noticed my bike started to bog down...

sounded and felt as if id hit reserve which i knew i couldnt of been so i switched to reserve but still didnt fix the issue.

let it cool down tried again still the same so i limped to mums to have a little look, problem went away for a few seconds then came back, left mums it stopped again and ran fine for a few seconds then ran like shit again.

every gear under 5000-5500rpm it runs like utter shit and feels like its running out of fuel but after 5500 or so it runs fine and accelerates brilliantly.

Any ideas?

if someone says jets (which i think it may be) im gonna rage because i can bet 5 ponds the bowl screws are shagged.

Does sound like crap in the floatbowls, I'd be removing fuel tap,filters, lines and carbs, dismantling and cleaning everything out properly ( with compressed air) and hopefully that would find and fix the issue.

yeah as id thought

wanted clarification before i go ripping it apart.. not up for taking the bowls off as i just know the screws will have been attacked by some ham fisted gammon slipper jive bunny at some point.

If you won't take the bowls off then you won't be doing a complete job, if the screw heads are mashed you use a decent pair of small vise grip mole grips to undo them, which is what I do when I have that issue, you'll notice I mentioned the brand name "vise grips", cheap Chinese shitty mole grips mostly just don't cut it when it comes to getting a decent grip on small fasteners.

banged the airbox off and instantly saw my issue..

notice the lack of needle -.-

in the top part of the carb there is a spring to hold the needle in place, then a little yellow threaded cap on top of that to keep the spring in place then the usual long spring, the cap had managed to vibrate loose and the needle shot up into the carb top.

luckily no damage was caused and was simply a case of taking the top off and putting it back together.

Yeahh... 1 of the 4 screw heads mashed! had to public transport into town to get a mini hacksaw to sort it.

finaly done and all running good again.
