Well I've had my Suzuki Gsxr k2 750 around a month now I really love the bike, but I've got a couple of concerns; In 6th gear at speeds less than 70 I can hear a whine that I think is coming from the gear box. The other is its done 30K miles.
I've spoken to the 2 previous owners and neither have had the valves checked/adjusted. I've had a quote for the valves £400 to check and adjust. Is this about the average for this job? I dread to think what the gearbox would cost to overhaul.
Any recommendations for the Manchester or surrounding area where I can get it looked at?
I'm in two minds, get them looked at, or leave them alone. How important is it to get the valves done, and should I just stay out of 6th until I hit 70??
Thanks in advance for any help/info/advice,
Dave.

It's easy to check the valves yourself, so I'd start by checking them.

Drain coolant a bit, get the cover off and stick feeler gauges in, occasionally turning the engine a little.

It's a bit more hassle to do them, but really not that bad.
I'd definitely check them yourself, which should save a good bit of time and money off the bill as you can tell them exactly which are needed, or even get them yourself ready.
(Of course, some places won't like this.)
£400 does sound a bit expensive to me, but may be including two lots of disassembly and reassembly as they wait for parts.
I've seen getting on for £600 for a full 'main' service including valves and all parts

Thanks for the reply.
It was another £120 on top to give the bike the once over (not a service) as the bike is new to me, so was thinking of getting it checked out.
I have to work outside on her at the mo, but should have a garage for the winter. I may have a go. How easy is it to get to the cover?
Tank off, side fairings, air box off and your there??
Dave.

Shouldn't need to take side fairings off.

May take a few hours if you're being careful and it's your first time, but shouldn't be too bad.
Will need to undo the little cover in the middle of the generator cover to turn the engine. Also, take the spark plugs out so there's no compression.

Thanks again for the reply, but I've been doing a bit more reading. Not sure I'm up to this on my own. I would love to have the sense of achievement to do it, but I don't want to end up with a bike in bits that I can't put back together again.
Will phone a few places out of the phone book for quotes and take it from there. If I do decide to DIY it I will probably wait until the winter weather comes then I will have until spring to Finnish the job Wink

Dave.

Actually changing the valve shims is a bit more complicated - but just checking them really isn't that bad - you don't need to take nearly as much stuff off.

Well I've booked the bike in for next Wednesday at https://www.sgmotorcycles.com/ to get the valves checked/done.
Has anybody on here used them?

Also I have been told if the valves need and are adjusted the throttle bodies would need resyncing. Is this correct?

Yes. Different valve lift heights post adjustment will mean substantially different intake characteristics. Doesn't take long though especially with the bike apart anyway.

Thanks for the info Turkish,
They will charge £45 on top for doing it though.

Eugh. I know everyone has to make a living but you can almost buy a Morgan Carbtune for that. Considering you are having the other work done I'd have thought it would be included?
