Classic TT Suprised to see that Ago is riding considering his hostility to the TT.

"Agostini dropped a bombshell on the Grand Prix world when he announced he would never again race at the Isle of Man TT, after the death of his close friend, Gilberto Parlotti during the 1972 TT. He considered the 37 mile circuit unsafe for world championship competition. At the time, the TT was the most prestigious race on the motorcycling calendar. Other top riders joined his boycott of the event and by 1977, the event was struck from the Grand Prix schedule."

Correct, Agostini has always been welcome on the island and has returned several times, notably in 2009 when he rode an MV around the TT course accompanied by Valentino Rossi on an R1.

In 1972 Ago made a personal decision never to race here again after the death of his friend Parlotti, and he stood by that decision. Other top riders including Phil Read and Rod Gould also boycotted the TT stating that the TT was too dangerous. This was a turning point for the TT and eventually it was removed from the FIM calendar at the end of 1976.

Despite having vowed never to race in the island again, Phil Read returned in 1977 after Honda waved their cheque book and signed him to race in the new TT Formula series. Read was far from welcome here in the late 70's but memories fade over time and he was a guest speaker at the TT Press Launch in the island a couple of years ago.

Anyway, The Manx Grand Prix, now re badged as 'The Isle of Man Festival Of Motorcycling' gets underway this weekend with the first practice away on Saturday evening, safe racing to all competitors.
