Would there be any problems in getting a second hand restrictor kit from a bike salvage shop and using it to restrict another bike of the same kind? I want to restrict a GS500 but I don't want to have to pay 200 quid to have it done. Do you need to have the certificate if it is restricted (I intend on leaving it in and staying legal)?.

To be legal you must have the certificate, this require the restrictors be be fitted by an approved specialist.

However if you were to restrict it yourself and the insurance company didnt ask for proof of restriction then technically you're still legal i think. Thinking

A great many will sugest not bothering with restriction. I didnt, the insurance company didnt catch on, neither have the police. but it is a risk.

You'd still have to prove that it's restricted, meaning getting it Dyno'd and hoping they accept it. TBH it's no more or less legal to leave it un-restricted.

Wrong. There's no legal requirement to prove it's restricted, to get them fitted professionally or to even have restrictors. Only that the bike be less than 33bhp.

If you're using the offical 33bhp FI Interntational restrictors then the kit cannot be removed and refitted, so you can't do it offically.

You can buy a restrictor kit and get a dyno print out though as there is no legal requirement for anything other than it to be less than 33bhp.

Rick, I got a second hand pair of restrictors for my er-5 for free from an owners forum and fitted them, myself, to the bike. I then took the bike to a garage with a dyno and they were able to give me printouts showing its power as 33bhp. They wrote out on the receipt that the bike is restricted, and signed it, so that acted as proof for my insurance company.

It only cost me £45 for the dyno run. A saving of about £160 if I were to buy the new kit and get it fitted.

Go to the gs500e site here and go onto the forum. Sign up and ask people if they have restrictors handy.

I'm not too sure how the kit differs, but you'd really want to get the restriction kit FOR the actual suzuki gs500.

So I can't take the restrictor kit from one gs500 and put it into another gs500? That would make the bike less than 33bhp though wouldn't it so shouldn't it be legal?

There is no reason why you can't, get a dyno print out to show less than 33bhp and you're sorted.

FI International say that the restrictors cannot be removed and refitted as when they are removed fracture/stress cracks occur. They're talking shit, it's a metal washer which has a tough life doing not much, they just want you to buy another kit. So if you're wanting to buy a kit and fit it to another bike and then get it offically documented you can't.

Good point that you dont legally have to proove in advance that your bike is 33bhp.

Presumeably that means if you know a DIY method of making it 33bhp, then youre fine to do that?

Ofcourse unless you dyno it to check, then youre taking a risk that it might be 36bhp or something...

Let the tyres down, stuff a rag in the exhaust, stick it on the Dyno and you can probably manage under 33bhp Very Happy

i asked them and they said in the occurance of a claim if the bike is not restricted my insurance would be invalid!

Oh, and they only charged me £248.96 and i am 19 with 1 years no claims and just got full licence!

but they wanted proof of no-claims!
