Had a bit of bad luck on my way back from Spain towing my Fazer on a trailer.

Long story short. My trailer was stolen so I continued on the bike but rear bearings gave up and I didn't take the risk to continue in this conditions. I left it in Police Department in one of the little villages on N230 and agreed to collect it in 2-3 weeks.

My current plan to buy a trailer and do another trip to pick it up. Which is money and time.

As a plan B I have added a quote to https://www.deliveryquotecompare.com/. Maybe someone will be interested in it.

Just thinking about other options.

What would you suggest?

How knackered are the bearings?

I've ridden with fucked rear wheel bearings for quite a while, fronts too, although that is more unnerving...!

They'll have a lot of play before they fail.

around 500miles before I stopped to ride on it, I already heard some crunching but didn't realise where it comes from. After that I've done 300miles two up and after that it became obvious. I tried to go as far as I can and done another 200 miles.

Surely everything is possible but I'm looking for an optimal solution.

I would take the tools needed, fly out, repair bike, ride home.

But if you are getting a trailer to replace the one stolen do that instead.

If you're a tad iffy about replacing the bearings, then why not buy a whole wheel like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-fazer-600-rear-wheel-Tyre-/141037410820?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20d67c1a04

Have the bearings change or change them at home, and simply put it in your luggage wrapped up in paper and tape.

A wheel with tyre is about 12-14kilos. Which should get into a std in the hold bag easy, without tyre will get into a carry on bag.

Hell if you don't want to carry it you can always try post restante, and collect from a post office in France/Spain. Will cost more obviously.

Fly out, get it repaired out there and ride it back?

Surely the solution at the time was to seek a garage, there would have been one within 100km, flatbed to garage, and pay for the service.

A good idea from fatpies Thumbs Up.

If the police were cooperative, you could always get recovery and have a 'breakdown' next week.

But, I doubt it's worth it.

I'm planning to be over in France in my lorry next month, but I suspect the fuel to get to Spain to pick it up for you would be more than the cost of getting it delivered back by other means!

If you don't get anything else sorted, could see what I can do, but will probably be more than 3 weeks away.
[edit]£500+ in fuel; there will be much cheaper ways!

Everything was happening really quick. The problem in all it's beauty appeared Sat in the morning when we set off from Peniscola. I had 2 children and my wife with me. Ferry to UK was booked on Monday at 4PM.

Didn't want them to wait me.

Most of the garages don't keep parts for all possible bikes. Might take 2-4 working days to get them in, don't forget, it's Spain.

It's a bearing, its more the part fits the bearing rather than the bearing fits the part.

An old bloke with a beard pretty much said motor manufacturers make parts around existing bearings rather than bearings to fit their parts.

If Mondo Enduro found wheel bearings in 1995 Siberia during a time of hyper inflation you can too.

Yea, were it me I'd have tried at least - I bet that same bearing is used in quite a lot of different bikes too, so more likely parts places will have them in stock.

No help now.

Less easy if you don't speak Spanish too, of course.
I was very glad of my KTM assist when my clutch went in Spain - so they acted as translator on the other end of the phone.
When they couldn't get one in time, they also arrange a flight home for me and recovery for the bike, picked up from the airport.

For the next trip; have a look at ADAC. They are German, but do have English speaking people. One fee will cover all your vehicles everywhere in Europe, including the UK.

I would go this way too if I would have one important resource called - Time.

If money is an issue, find someone to van it across to me in Belgium (105 miles from Eurotunnel) and you can store it here for as long as you need. I could probably change out the bearings easy enough too. If you buy and deliver the bearings to me and the FZ1 has a centre stand too!

I'd do as said aove, get a second hand wheel with tyre on it and go out with that, ride it back.

Buy bearings, put together a small toolkit and fly out.

Or, find someone with spanners who will pillion you out there, fit bearings, ride back.

I'd take you out there, have tools and ability to do bearings.

I'd still suggest you get a wheel and get it out there to fit it and ride back. I would do this.

Only thing that would slightly worry me is if the bearing had completely collapsed so the inner race was free. Even that wouldn't be a show-stopper if both bearings were identical, you would knock out the intact bearing, smash the outer race then load the inner race into the collapsed bearing with loose balls held in grease and spaced evenly around, then drift that bearing out.

I'd take a little dremel type toool running on a small inverter off the bike and use it to cut the bearing in two to get it out.
Nothing worse when doing bearings to have one that won't come out because it's so fucked.

@Marmalade & @Pete

That's the thing with the bearings, I'm afraid that they are in bad condition and won't come out with normal puller. I have a dremel. Hope Police can share one of their sockets.
Will try it on some old bearing with similar kind of steel to see how it's going. Maybe that steel is too hard for it or maybe OK.

Also I left some stuff there, including two new wheels for stolen trailer and my Oxford soft panniers Smile

dremel with cutting disks will cut the bearings, will need a few usually though. Done a few on my bikes.
