Hello, I am starting a full time placement year on the 2nd of September and will be doing the commute from Brighton to Crawley Mon-Fri for 12 months then returning back to Univeristy. I have looked at trains which come to £200 a month. I am considering buying a motorbike as eventually I would like to get a full licence and get a proper motorbike later on in life, so I thought I may as well start now.
The main problem is that I would have to pay for the bike on finance as I have little initial capital (just about enough for a deposit). I would prefer to go for a used motorbike which is reliable rather than a cheap new Asian bike. My question is can you pay for a used bike, say bought from Ebay or Gumtree, on finance and how do you go about it.
I have looked at buying from dealers but the bike prices are quite steep, even second hand. If anyone can recommend a good site that is either close to Brighton or delivers that would be great.
My budget for a bike would be £1500 in total so I would be paying around £125 - £150 in monthly payments for 12 months. I have also debated having an 18 month contract therefore allowing my budget to go up to around £2000.

Thanks

Sam

Some credit cards (my virgin card for example) are always offering me 0% on cash transfers in to my bank account which is something else you could look at.

Just remember to pay it off before the offer ends, as the cash rate tends to be quite high afterwards

Thumbs Up

That's pretty much what I did to get my first 125. I was lucky and found a seller on ebay who was willing to take card payment - I simply paid via paypal using his laptop at his house, very nice chap he was to let me do that, most folk prefer cash!

Credit card purchase limits your options to trade sellers only pretty much, better bikes sold privately for the same price. Also some of the trade sellers charge a fee if you want to pay with a credit card, so not exactly 0% deal.

EDIT: Oh.. forgot about eBay, my bad.

Even on ebay though you would be hard pushed to find someone willing to take £1500 via paypal, because the fees take a massive chunk of that away. I was VERY lucky to find a guy willing to take the £1500 I paid via paypal, I guess he just wanted a quick sale and perhaps I was paying a bit more for the bike than I should have anyway - still £300 cheaper than I could find it in any dealers though Thumbs Up

£125 easily gets you a new bike from a dealer. Dealers can get you finance on second hand as well. Last year my bigger initial costs eere gear and security not the bike.

Finance on a used bike = rape you on interest. You'll likely get a new bike even with interest for cheaper.

My brother has just bought a new YBR125 - new it was £2500, a used one was £1400 and after the 23.4% interest and the admin fees on a used bike, it was more than the new one.

As we arrived some plank was getting a 12 month old 250cc scoot on finance - new it was £2500 as well, cash it was £2000 2nd hand. Ended up on finance for £3200 or something silly like that. Ridiculous.

OP: this. Have you factored in gear, locks and insurance? You'll probably spend at least £100 on security, maybe £300 or so on gear (a half decent helmet, properly waterproof jacket and trousers if you're commuting, w/p boots) and insurance depends on you - get quotes before signing anything!

It was a Suzuki dealer but a franchised one, they sold all sorts from GSXRs to farty little scooters, cruisers, everything. More than just Suzuki as well but can't tell you for the life of me what else they sold.

To be honest the dealer get no say in the finance part of it, it's the finance company that set the extortionate interest rates - new was 0% on my brother's YBR125 over 3 years, put a £750 deposit down so his payments are only 40-ish quid a month. Had to get my dad to sign as a guarantor as he's only 18 Laughing That being said he's keeping it for at least 4 years through uni (same as me) so the finance made sense instead of just putting up the full £2500 in one go.

The used ones were the ones with ridiculous finance. For new they use Blackhorse but used were another company as Blackhorse only finance vehicles over 2k or something like that. 23.4% is criminal though, especially on a used bike.

Not on 125s they don't Laughing Bike is only worth £2.5k. 0% interest over 3 years they do, but not cashback.

Honda are doing 4.9% over 3 years on CBF125 with £100 cashback until the end of September, but that's about all the cashback type offers I've seen.
