Quote:
The simple fact that has perpetuated the MSG stigma in our culture more than any other is that food high in MSG is almost always bad for you. Almost all of Ajinomoto’s MSG is bought by the processed foods industry — upward of 21 million pounds per year, according to one estimate. Only in poorer countries that lack industrialized food infrastructure is the sale of “over-the-counter” MSG for use in home kitchens significant, Smriga says. Simply put, the foods that provide an average American his or her FDA-estimated half-gram of MSG daily are not healthy. But not because of MSG.

Sure but several issues.

It enables cheaper ingredients to be used, thus boosting profits, y'know like putting wood pulp renamed cellulose or gum.

Why are food manufactures constantly hiding it rather than being truthful about it? E621 often named, Calcium caseinate, Sodium caseinate Yeast extract, Torula yeast, Yeast food, Yeast nutrient, Autolyzed yeast, Gelatin, Textured protein, Whey protein, Whey protein concentrate, Whey protein isolate, Soy protein, Soy protein concentrate, Soy protein isolate etc

Yes but that doesn't make MSG bad, that's just typical capitalism trying to wring every last penny of profit. There's a general feeling that MSG is harmful based on dodgy research done over 30 years ago.

The article certainly doesn't shy away from the fact it's used in shitty food.

Quote:
If you eat Doritos, you’ve just eaten MSG. Same with practically any other snack with cheese powder, Kentucky Fried Chicken, many types of cold cuts, canned soups, soy sauce, and hundreds of other processed foods.

But that still doesn't make MSG bad.

Quote:
Hoernlein tells me most of the people who email her with stories of their health improving after avoiding MSG have a history of other medical problems, as she does. When I ask her which foods she has to avoid to control her exposure to MSG and her blood pressure, her list includes canned soups, Caesar dressing, sausage, “anything Parmesan encrusted,” soy sauce, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

So, stop eating shit food and you get better so it must be the MSG? That's not really science.

MSG rocks and the Japs use bucketloads of it. Thumbs Up

Funnily enough they're incredibly healthy and fit and generally live well into their 80s/90s. Thinking

I'd eat a bowl of MSG just to prove I don't care. Now, where can I buy it?

MSG is not in it's self so harmful but too much sodium of any sort loads yer kidneys.

Just treat with some respect as one should with sodium chloride.
