Right here goes one that's bound to be controversial....

Basically looking for some advice on the best sports 600 for me,

Aged 25 moving from an er6n , almax chain and Oxford monster disc lock etc so good security gear squared away.

Do about 1200 miles a month about 75% being motorway and ride all year round rain or shine , like I said looking to spend about 5k give or take a little bit and open to all suggestions. Know this has been asked a few times but mostly for fair weather riding etc so any help greatly appreciated

Daytona 675 would be my choice. Or potentially i'd consider a Ducati 749 if I didnt intend to sell the bike on.

Just go test ride everything, particularly different engines and their characteristics, to see which you prefer. Theyre all more than capable nowadays with reliability being a given for most models. Just consider ergonomics and looks as they are all well beyond what we are most likely be able to achieve. Very Happy

For comfort and ease of use I would go for a 1000cc instead. Loads on here recommend the GSXR thou, although I would look to save some money and go for something older like a Thunderace. Laughing

Not if you want fun.

From the ones I've ridden, all the latest sports 600s have got good enough that there's not a massive amount between them.

They're all pretty revvy but with a smooth delivery, all handle nicely and all have good brakes (well, or Tokicos).

If you want ease of speed, litre bikes; but for fun I prefer to work for it a bit, so a sports 600 is more involving - and just as fast until the speeds get really licence losing if you are actually 'trying'.

I was going by the motorway miles. My R1 returned far better mileage than my 600 on long runs.

If he wants fun, a 600 sports isn't what I'd be looking at Wink

For loads of motorway miles I'd go for a litre bike, but it depends on insurance and stuff I guess.

CBR1000RR-5 (2005/6), clean one for >£4k..

Go to a newer '07+ shape for £4.5 - £5k.

I like CBR's.

You could even get a nice Blackbird for £4-5k, you'd lose some of the raw sportiness but it'd eat up motorway miles at daft speeds for fun, and still be decent on the twists..

Hi

1200 miles a month on a supersports 600 might not be that much fun.

How much are you expecting for the Er6? Would a cheaper older 600 be possible, keeping the Er6 for much of your motorway monotony?

All the best

Keith

Got to agree I thought a litre bike would suit better when I read the requirements, try a few for insurance, you may be surprised.

Actually if it was me, I would keep an eye out for a cheap K1300S and have 'busa performance for the motorways with a shaft for ease of maintenance and heated grips as standard for the 8 months a year they come in handy.

https://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqJ,!rIFBPSRPY,LBQWEHl!sQg~~_12.JPG

That one is a little over budget, but comes with electronic suspension, abs, traction control, heated grips, quick shifter blah blah blah... just about all of the bells and whistles you could want. For the best part of 1000 miles of motorways a month, that is the bike I would want!

Just to add to my post above, a K1300S is pushing the budget, but the K1200S can be found to that money and is pretty similar spec.

I am in the same camp as Keith, keep the ER6 for the motorway + winter commutes and get a mid 2000s sports 600 like a ZX6R B1H or even a K5 GSXR 750 for the weekends.

Keeps the mileage down on the sports bike and makes it easier to sell when you want something else (not if but when..)

I used to commute on my ZX6R all year round and it isn't pleasant in the winter when the back end steps out, gets all squirrelly on a frozen roundabout and for that brief few seconds you start visualizing the repair bills.

Daytona 675. I ride mine all year, it's still immaculate. You can get an 09 or maybe even an SE for that money.

It was maybe the 1200 version I took around Brands.
Not bad in the right pair of hands (not mine - some more experienced racers who flashed past me when I was riding my own bike.)

However, you're back to having the power of a decent litre bike, but a chunk more weight - unless you really need the extra comfort and can't get that from the litre bike, I'd stick heated grips (and muffs) on to the sharper bike personally.

A litre bike has more usable power where you need it in the mid-range. Unlike a 600, you don't have to rev the tits off one to make good progress on the road.

I'd still probably have the K12 and certainly the 13 if it was in budget, its a bike designed for motorway munching, not as a razor sharp track tool. The dyno graphs for the K1200S and as a good example a GSXR1000 K7 (suits the £5k budget) are very closely matched, pretty even torque and power across the graph. The K13 is just more, everywhere.

The way I see it is as a commuter for the whole year the BMW wins hands down, there is no way you can find a 1000cc bike to match the spec of the BMW without throwing another £2000 on top of the budget. When you are commuting through the winter on a bike with over 150bhp having traction control and ABS would be pretty reassuring. To top it off you can have the suspension set for comfortable smooth riding through the winter, and then come the sunny summer Sunday with the press of a button firm the whole lot up and go for a blast.

For me the big beemer would be hard to beat given the requirements.

Edit: Also I didn't add that nobody wants to be crawling around fiddling with a filthy bike in the middle of February trying to adjust a chain and free stiff links. Plus when doing 1200 miles a month that is going to be at least one new chain and sprocket set a year.

Big Shaftie hyperbike FTW!
