Help me O' knowledgable lords.

Today just as I crossed 16K miles on my '05 Honda CBR 125R it decided to throw a wobbly - exhaust cracked and split in half at the same time as the cam chain tensioner went, so now I have a very very noisy (not necessarily a bad thing - sorry, that's the boy racer in all of us coming out!) (like, a 500CC bike or Harley noisy)

Yeah, I have a very noisy bike, where if I ride along with 0 throttle applied, I get a very tinny rattling sound (like a broken lightbulb)

This is apparently the cam chain tensioner

My exhaust has split in two pieces on the underside, near where it connects to the engine.

And finally I was advised to have my chain and sprockets changed as the sprocket had *insert fastly-spoken mechanic jargon to disable you from understanding what was actually said here* on it, and the mechanic demonstrated this by pulling the chain off the back of the sprocket, well, he didn't pull it off, but there's slack.

So my question is, what's the cheapest way to go about this? I believe there are probably a few things I could do myself if I bought the right tools, and I don't mind spending four hours myself on one thing as opposed to spending £40-60 on a Mechanic doing it in one hour, then VAT too.

Any ideas on where I can get proper Honda parts for my bike, online, that's cheaper than where a Mechanic could get the same parts from?

I just really don't have the disposable income to chuck £200-400 on this Bike right now, especially since it passed MOT in July... Really out of the blue. Well, except for it regularly dropping from 6th to 5th (which I was told was the cam chain tensioner)

And what repairs could I do myself? The mechanic said that the exhaust can easily be welded, but they don't do it there, and I've already looked online for CCT replacements but have found that if you do it wrong and start your engine up - bye bye engine.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it Smile

get exhaust welded and replace cam chain tensioner, do not run with a nackerd one. beside to point of it may drop part into the motor but a slack cam chanin can jump teeth on the cam shaft or crank shaft meaning that valve timing become incorect and highly increases the chance of the whole thing going bang forcing replacment of with majer engine parts, entire engine or entire bike.

its a cpr 125 so for chine and sprockets just pick up run of the mill jt chain and sprockets, there chain are meant to be nearly as good as D.I.D but a fairbit cheaper. split link will be fine, no need to go as far as a soft link.

you should be able to remove the exhast fairly easily, mark on both half so it can be lined up, take it off, take it any where that can weld (cars garage may do it for you)

I don't understand the cam chain tensioner being blamed for dropping from 6th to 5th? errr no...... if it is dropping out of 6th and into 5th then the most likely is worn dogs on the selector hub in the gearbox, they probably have worn/sloping edges that force the dogs out of engagement under load with enough ferocity to click into 5th. Not a simple repair nor a cheap one for someone with not much knowledge, another engine perhaps is the best way out?

Fix exhaust first, see what cam chain sounds like after, you seem to have been fed such bullshit,it's best fix the obvious/simple first and see what remains.

Fix the exhaust and see if the noise disappears. Any leaks near the engine from the exhaust sound like various other "engine is making a fuck ton of noise" issues.

Does it sound like this?

16K and the bike falls to bits, Honda are getting sloppy. Do not run with a slack cam chain, a new tensioner will not cost much. Welding the pipe will cost you about £10 and I seriously doubt a drive chain on a 125 is dead in 16K.
BTW the cam chain is not causing it to jump out of gear Mr. Green

Just recorded a video of what my bike sounds like, plus me riding it down the street and back up, you can only hear the engine tinkering sound. Man, if there was a Worcester-based dude who knows his stuff I sure would like to swing it by to get a second opinion. I have a feeling the garage I went to is just trying to squeeze the dolla out of me Sad

To check the drive chain, lift the middle of it up with your toe.

If it's moving up more that about 2 inches, adjust the chain.

If you reach the end of the adjusters, and it still moves more than 2 inches or it's still slack, it's fucked.

Consider chain and sprockets to be consumables the same as your brake pads/shoes.
