im turning 17 soon, im looking at getting a motocross/endure kind of bike. it needs to be quick enough to get up hills and go around town okay btu speed is not the main factor, any suggestions?

Do you want to ride it off road at all?

Do you want good fuel economy?

Will it be used daily for commuting?

What sort of roads will you be riding?

If you want to go off road, get a dt 125 r. If you want it for looks, get a dt 125 x Laughing

i would be riding it every day on the roads, but i would also like to be able to go offroad if i wanted to but wouldnt be vital, would be for going about town?

What's your budget?

Something like the dt125 or kmx125 sound like good choices.

If you wanted to sacrifice power for mpg, the xr125 isn't too bad, though slow.
The 4 stroke MZ125 dirt bike is quite rare, but makea good power for a 4 stroke.

Take a look at the Honda XR125. Great bike, can be had fairly cheap now too.

Not if you want one with a bit more go to it - it's pretty asthmatic.

I'd stick to a 2 stroke (KMX, DT) or the MZ125.

If you leave out the off-roading, the TDR125 is a pretty good road bike.

I had an XR 125 for a year aswell, decent bike for a beginner however as G said, slow.

Just get a DT 125 and be done with it Thumbs Up

Instead of typing that, you could have typed the models in to google and found out yourself!

DT125 is as good a choice as a KMX; they're the two main 2 stroke trail bikes that aren't really old.

The KDX125 is a little more dirt focused, but can still be a decent choice.

*Have heard they need to be looked after and usually are ragged to fuck examples

'Go' comes in two forms.... when its going you want it to 'go' a bit more.... when it's not going.... just just wish it would!

At 17, on L-Plates or A1 'legal' bike, there is fuck all between them.

We are talking miniscule amounts of more or less 'go'.

We are talking HUGE amounts of difference in, Why ent it got No GO... at all... where's the work-shop section.

Third class riding beats first class walking, when bikes dead again.

Stuff the performance; on a £1200 budget looking for something with knobly tyres, you will be buying on CONDITION if you have any sense what so ever.... or I suppose merely dont mind walking a lot!

Clapped out bikes are clapped out bikes; and walking to work? Well, couple of days bussing it while bikes in bits... REALLY loweres the 'average' speed!

XR125, is a good bet. Four stroke is pretty rugged, think its the push-rod CG engine we established last time round; No. Its not 'quick'... but then little with 125 on the side is. But for your money, you ARE more likkely to get one in half decent nick that stands better chance of being able to do three miles per hour less whenever you ride it; rather than one thats clapped out or been dicked with for de-restriction, likely to deliver a wopping extra 7mph... briefly between rebuilds!

Your call.

Also a humble CG125 is pretty good 'off-road'.. certainly on legal unsurfaced rights of way, at legal speeds... and a set of block-tread makes them even better. Same goes for bench-mark YBR, and many other humble commuters.

While they DO say, if its made of China... it will probably break. If its made IN China... it almost certainly WILL break... do dont tale them off road... in fact, be very weary of taking them beyond the verges of a metalled road"

Difference between 11.1 and 14.6hp is quite significant, I'd say.
That's about the percentage difference between an early R6 and early R1.
(And that's just the 4 strokes.)
Then there's that you can get a bit more power out of a 2 stroke if you go for one of those and derestrict, and despite your usual protestations, so far I've not heard of a kitten being even gently bruised from people doing this!

A 4 stroke 125 tends to be a bit sluggish up steep hills - the 2 stroke can handle a fair bit more once de-restricted and unless you treat it badly, will be fine.

Of course, if the OP is going to treat it badly, the 4 stroke is probably a better bet - presuming he can sell it before it ends up needing a very expensive rebuild!

I would consider a VanVan as well. Not a proper off road bike, but it does manage.

VanVan forum is also very active and there is always some green lane rideouts happening.

DTR's are supposed to be quicker.

Do what I did, get a DTR and whack DTX wheels on it. Good to go. Thumbs Up

Even if you don't know anything about bike mechanics, it's pretty straight foward taking any 2 stroke engine out the bike, with parts a full rebuild will end up costing 200-250 all in.

If you're the type of person that favours a kebab over a new spark plug, get a four stroke.

A well set up DT with working power valve will push out 24-27hp depending on supporting mods. To me that's worth the little extra love you have to give it. There's a lot more in them too, TZR cylinder...Athena kit...etc

Before anyone starts talking 15hp A1 bollocks, it's his choice whether he wants to take the risk. But let's be honest, it's a very low risk. Police might become increasingly vigilant in the next year however due to the new A1 restrictions.
