Hi All

My project RAT/Streetfighter bike (I'm learning as I go and doing cosmetics first) keeps running really well but then after about 4/6 days of being used every day, the battery just dies off. Last time it happened was last month, I haven't ridden her in maybe two weeks and she started first time and used her all week and started on the button

This is a brand new battery, once charged it's running fine again. I got the battery thinking the drain might just due to age.

One thing though, I rarely put the lights on (it's a bit ratty and needs work) but today I put the (stock) headlight on for maybe 10 minutes, then battery died, but no signs of dimmed lights until I nipped in the shop, battery dead on return. Bump and it's running. I thought the flashers were, well flashing a bit quicker than they should be though but I was concentrating on staying upright rather than the indicator lights so brushed it off

Do you think this is just the reg/rec that needs changing? I've read this is a known issue with the er5?

Please excuse the novice question

Are all of your connections tight and clean?

4-6 days seems like a long period of time for a battery which isn't being charged to last for. Not unless you cover like 30 miles in those 4-6 days.

Do you own a multimeter?

Start the bike up and rev it to around 4-5k RPM and take a reading over the battery terminals. Anywhere between 13-14.5v is a nice voltage to have.

I don't but I know a man that does, actually I think the battery charger has that function.

The journeys are really short and now you say it, the last time it did it I rode about 35 miles, that was also the hottest day of the year so I put some of it down to that, the bike had sat still for a little while prior to me having it a couple of weeks before hand.

It's got new sparks, battery and wiring seems to be all OK, Engine runs sweet as well, just this discharges that's doing me in

Get yourself a multimeter. They're cheap as chips and make diagnosis of these sorts of problems a LOT easier!

Sounds a bit like an intermittent parasitic draw - maybe a live that keeps shorting out somewhere?
