Hi all.

I'm 51, I passed my full driving test in 1984, and have a provisional entitlement to A and GH on my counter part. I have also been told because I passed before all these new rules I can jump straight onto a 125cc on the road because of my age.

Is this true or will I have to do my CBT/DAS?

Thanks Cool

You still need to do your CBT as this "validates" your provisional entitlement to ride a bike on L plates up to 125cc

You can however ride a 50cc without L plates or any training what so ever.

But would you really want to ride a bike without any training????

No.
Since 1982, provisional motorcycle entitlement limits you to 125cc machines.

When that law was introduced, provisional motorcycle entitlement was only granted on a provisional licence by 'opt in', on the application form. If you didn't specifically requent M/C entitlement, you didn't get it.

And if you did, it was granted for a period of two years only, not like other entitlements, until your 70th birthday.

If you didn't convert your provisional licence to a full licence within the validity period of the provisional M/C entitlement; you were subject to a 12 month disqualification, before you could re-apply for a period of 2-years entitlement.

'Perpetual' provisional M/C entitlement, AFAIK was not 'automatically' awarded on a full licence, granted for passing car test, UNLESS provisional M/C entitlement, had been requested on the provisional licence AND was within the validity period. (Ie to stop people taking car test after loosing learner entitlement for a bike, to get their provisional M/C back).

So, chances are, you do not have any provisional entitlement to ride a 125 on L's through these 'grandad rights'.

However... why would you want to exploit them even if they do apply?

CBT is compulsary basic training. Teaches you the basics and is your first lesson for riding a motorcycle.

Just because you might not HAVE to do it.. its still a bludy good idea to go get some learning, before you throw a leg over the most dangerouse form of motorised road transport yet devised!

I mean, its a day playing with motorbikes, in a reasonably controlled enviroment.....

See link in sig line "So you want to Ride a Motorbike".. fair bit of advice about it there, along with cautions against thinking that quarter of a century in a car or any other life experience automatically gives you some head start when it comes to bikes... there's pro's and cons each way, and best to start at the beginning, with a mind open to learning.... in which case a 'first lesson' makes a LOT of sense.

He's a story teller, and his stories must be told.

CBT, then don't waste your time on a 125, get your A license via a training school. You'll be safer on a bigger more capable bike without Loser plates.

Even if you could avoid a CBT I really wouldn't miss out on it. A bike is NOTHING like a car.

I've been driving for 3 and a half years and cycling since I was a kid and I got on a 125 bike and shit myself at how different it was. I spent 7 hours riding around clenching my arse because it's completely unlike anything I'd done before.
