Hi Guys and Girls

Returning to a forum after my accident and the acquisition of another cbr 600 Very Happy

anyway I got the bike this morning delivered and it's lovely to ride !

I did notice when it started it did produce a small intimitant "rattle" until it was warmed up

I then took it for a ride and came back and silence so I thought maybe as the bike had been sitting still unrun for 3/4 weeks before it had got to me something may have been sticking? anyway I went to start it again this afternoon and the same happened again until warm

After some research i have fund the mostly likely cause its going to be the cam chain tensionser. My question to you is how hard is it to change as it seems to be tank off, RHS of bike off and then access the CCT

Research is most likely correct.

It is not hard at all. It can be tricky when installing the tensioner, you will likely need to wind in the tensioner a little bit to help you putting the bolts in. I would use a wire coat hanger for that, cut in half and then sharpened at one end (like a screwdriver) and a handle out of the other. You'll manage it.

I had one do the same - I gave the tensioner spring one more turn of pre-load and it stopped rattling.

I had EXACTLY this with a 1998 CBR 600 F3 just a few weeks back.
Eventually got a Manual tensioner, took about 20 minutes to get the side panels off, CCT out, new manual one in, tighten up, back off a touch, start and ajust untill running quietly.
Take it for a quick ride to be sure its not to tight and job's a good'un Wink
Back to its quiet old self now. Very happy, got one for £40 posted on the old fleabay.

Best regards

is it the manual adjuster which lasts longer but needs regular adjusting compared to the automatic adjuster

I modified mine with a slightly stronger spring from a kwaka gt550,
its a bit of a bodge and includes slotting a allen bolt into the stronger spring

yes,
the manual one will need adjusting a little more often but should theoretically last indefinitely unlike the auto tensioners (or at least until your cam chain wares out... and then can just be set for the new chain tension).

A new automatic tensioner from David silver spares is £84 posted. A manual can be had for £40 if you look about Wink

Yes, you can. But mind and undo them slowly and evenly in that case. Dont undo one bolt completely and then do the other.

You will need A tool but not specifically that one. It can be done with a screwdriver although will be very fiddly on the CBR600 (due to the frame/fairings etc). On my hornet with pretty much the same engine, it's a less than 5 minute job to replace because it's so accessible.

Good luck, you'll be fine. When the CCT is fitted, don't immediately remove the tool....unwind it to let the tensioner go in gently.

so install the new one with the new gasket and wind it in and then as mentioned earlier half a turn back , then start the bike and wind it in / out until the noise stops?

Once you feel it stops wanting to wind itself in, remove the tool, put the cover bolt back in the CCT and then start the bike. It's an 'automatic' CCT so shouldn't need adjusting.

It is an official OEM Honda CCT yes? That is what I am speaking about.

Then ignore everything I just said and go listen to someone else who has experience with a manual CCT. An OEM CCT is only £57 from David Silver spares.

They must like you, I was quoted £85 and a 3-4 day wait for exactly the same part/bike just a couple of weeks ago! Neutral

With the manual tensioner you only need a few spanners, wind in until its seated against the cam chain, out half a turn, start it and ajust until its running nice and quietly Thumbs Up

Best regards

if I had known that I may of gone for the automatic Razz

I bought the "special tool" needed. so when installing just place it in do the two bolts up, wind the tensioner in until I feel it stops then half a turn back and then start the bike. then im guessing tighten it until quiet?

sorry if so many qs just dont wanna f*** it up.

that's okay.
Tighten it up until the top end noise disappears at idle and then take it out for a little ride.
Be sure to take note of your idle, if this has decreased or you hear a squealing noise then you have the CCT to tight.
Better to be a slight bit looser than to tight as to tight will wear out your Cam chain guides prematurely.

Best regards

When to fit this today and was very disappointed to find the part I bought doesnt fit! the holes are too far apart for the bolts.

I am wondering if you guys can recommend me somewhere to buy one? other than david silver spares? im tempting to buy an automatic one now... Sad
