Would like some advice. My dads car is a Nissan Primera P11, 1999 1.6. Done about 130k miles.

Its got had problems accelerating and bogs down very bad under full or part throttle, but can be driven with a light throttle. Its so bad that changing up a gear helps Shocked It has zero acceleration up hills and for now is unsafe to drive..

He let a garage look at it, they say its the O2 sensor. They ordered 3 (yes three!?!) but were unable/incompetent enough to get them with the wrong connectors. This is a load of bollocks becuase it does it from cold (and warm) and O2 sensors take time to heat up. Unplugging O2 sensor to force it into open loop has no effect, still very bad so cant be the problem.

I dont think its a sensor, possibly timing or fuel?

Once when it bogged down I got a huge backfire from it Very Happy seems very similar to when my 125 bike with rust in the fuel blocking the carb and running very rich...

If it's been taken to a garage they should of done a diagnostic check, (diagnostic tool that plugs into the OBD socket and reads the ecu for codes) It would of given them a Indication on what area of the engine the code is coming from.

A OBD code scanner is what your in need of if the car hasn't had a scan, however, their are symptoms their that's it either caused by 02 sensor or mass air flow, as both can control fuel. But it will. more likely be mass air flow.

Both the sensors aren't expensive, try euro car parts or eBay.

Nissan Air flow sensors from around this area were shite and commonly had issues with dry joints that gave the symptoms but never gave a fault code.

You can pull codes from Nissans without a reader, so I would do this first, O2 sensors should throw a code.

https://www.primera-egt.com/FSM/P11-144/codes.pdf

It does sound like a MAF sensor though, I dont know about Nissans but I know that on Audi's if you unplug the MAF it will revert to "base" settings and will make the car run properly, albeit with about 70% power, it's usually enough to show up a bad MAF though.

I would say MAF/air flow sensor trouble, sometimes they go wildly out of calibration/break yet give no trouble codes, many diagnostic testers let you see live data of the various sensor outputs on the tester screen and this is the best way to see if the maf is working ok or not.

wow Laughing

I have tried unplugging the O2, MAF, TPS and ICV (wasnt certain which was tps Rolling Eyes no ICV makes it stall v. quickly ). It was bad with any of them unplugged.

However slightly better without the TPS. Revs would hunt a lot more. It was slightly more driveable. I doubt the TPS is bad but not certain..
