So I am trying to sell my 125 on ebay at the moment...

Last night I got a message from someone saying that they wanted to transfer me the money via paypal and have a courier pick the bike up...

It seems a little too good to be true Shocked does this normally happen?

I have a arranged to ring the potential buyer later today. Has anyone got any advice for if it does go ahead?

Cheers Very Happy

Paypal can be reversed, bank transfer only.

Entirely plausable that someone who has not got a license wants the bike, and they'd want it couriering back. I'd personally not buy something without viewing it first, but have sold to many people who have.

Ask for the company name of the courier, if there is no name then forget it.

If it's a dodgy paypal account the money will be clawed back whichever way paypal choose to do it but they will get the money back from you.

Tell the buyer it's either cash on collection or bank transfer, the courier i use for picking up bikes has taken cash for me to collect bikes on my behalf. I bank transfer it to him, he draws it out and pays the seller.

Might not be dodgy but I would be very very careful

Have had couriers pay me cash on collection before. Plenty of people on ebay buy here then ship to other countries, just be cautious with Paypal.

if you're dealing in services or any type of virtual goods (including website sales), you have no protection if the buyer decides to do a charge back. Paypal offer very little assistance when these things happen and in the overwhelming majority they will reverse the payment.

If they say not to bother, don't give in.

You won't have lost a sale but rather would have lost out on giving your bike away to some scumbag.

Just for the record, gift payments cannot be reversed and paypal does not cover vehicles.

Does anyone actually know of a case where a payment has been reversed for a vehicle??

So if someone hacked your account and paid a grand out of it that was not authorised by you, you think paypal wouldn't get it back from the person it was paid out to?

How do you prove that though?

And I think the bank would pay the money back not paypal in that instance.

Also if you sold a bike and someone paid via gift payment on paypal surely a receipt of the sale or proof of the transfer would be valid if they tried to say their account was hacked?

Well I spoke to him on the phone, and he was adamant that he would pay with paypal. tbh I wouldn't really want to use paypal for that kind of money...

This all points towards a scam IMO.
Walk away unless it's cash on colection (and even then make sure that you're not being paid in forged notes!!!).
Good luck with the sale.

if it is because he has the funds in his paypal account, tell him to transfer it to his bank account then withdraw the cash.
otherwise it's a scam.
email him a link to this forum. Laughing

I had the exact same thing when selling a drum kit a couple of years ago. The kit was up for about £1800 and this fella emailed me wanting to pay through paypal, and then said he would get the kit picked up by a courier etc etc...
Fearing a scam i emailed him a few questions asking about the courier, and also what kind of music he played, if he was in a band etc... All i kept getting back fro him was that he wanted to pay by paypal and pick up by courier.
In the end i just stopped replying, and ended up selling to some lad who payed cash on pickup.
I would stay clear personally. IMO paypal is ok for smaller amounts, or if you are 100% sure, but if there is any doubt i would avoid.
Good luck!

I've sold things worth other £1000 on ebay and they've paid through paypal. Get them to write in the payment what's for etc and that no refund will be given, so the same in auction description. Could get them to send it as 'gift' which is not reversable but not reccomended.
