Hey all

Living at my mums for a little while so need sky in the room I'm in.

I have a sky plus box and viewing card, the only problem is the socket for sky (built into the wall one) only has one cable but sky plus needs 2.

Is there a splinter kit I can get to make this into 2cables?

Cheers all

Kai

Nope, you'll need another cable running from the LNB.

I take it your box has two screw on connectors
if so one is for watching the other is for recording / live rewind etc
so you should only need on unless you want to use sky+

don't think a splitter will work
you may need to change the LNB (bit on your dish) that has 4 outputs and feed 2 into the room your in

I'll explain better, it has a satalite dish on the house and the 2 bedrooms have a socket for one lead, and the down stairs is a twin to sky plus, I just thought there maybe a connector to make 1 into 2 like I use to have on a freeview at the old house

No, a splitter will not work properly (if at all)
You will be able to use one feed to the box for normal viewing (as oldpink rightly says).

Some channels are horizontally polarised, some are vertically polarised. The box sends a signal to the LNB to change it when required. If the splitter did work and you were watching a channel that uses vertical polarisation you would only be able to record a channel using the same polarisation. I don't know what would happen if the box tried to 'tell' the LNB to be horizontal and vertical at the same time...(either nothing, fry the LNB or fry the box).

I don't know if you could use a manual switch to share the LNB between both sockets depending on whether you are watching or recording...

//edited to add :
You say there's another outlet in another bedroom...is that being used? You could re-route that and it would work fine.

You can still record with just one feed, but whilst something is recording you can only watch whatever that is at the same time. However, you can watch something you have already recorded whilst the live channel is being recorded. This is exactly how the rental house I am in is set up... one feed from the LNB; I plugged in my Sky+HD box and set it to 'single channel mode' and job done.

If I want to watch something whilst the box is recording I'll either watch something already recorded on the Sky box, switch the TV to its Freeview tuner or watch sommat on the iPad.

If I set something to record without changing the Chanel before I got out, will it change it fr me?

It'll come with a clash message saying something like "if you want to carry on watching this you'll have to cancel the recording". Press back-up to cancel this and it will automatically switch to the programme for recording when it starts.

I can live with it, but it does get a bit annoying if I want to watch something that only Sky broadcast, and record something else that only Sky broadcast. I tend to use the Sky+ app on the iPad to try and find an alternative showing of what I want to record, when I am not in or overnight.

You can go into the settings menu (or secret menu possibly?) of Sky Box and turn off the 2nd LNB feed, as to make the box now only use a single feed which will make the box behave like the earlier released box on the market where you'll be only able to view the channel that is being recorded and once the recording has stopped you'll be able to change to another channel.

So, when you move another property that has a twin/quad LNB then you'll be to re-enable that feature within the settings menu.

As others have stated to watch one channel while recording another requires a minimum of a Dual LNB, as you cannot split one cable feed into two.
