Just nipped down to the shop a few minutes ago... on the way there I was overtaken by a biker who was pointing at his back light.... something looked a little odd but didn't click straight away.

But I checked to make sure my lights were on and my indicators were off, since I was only a couple of hundred yards from the shop I figured I would just stop there rather than the side of the road.

As the guy started pulling away I realised what the problem was with him.... he had no tail light, but the brake light worked.

I got to the car park and looked at the back of my bike.... and had no tail lights.... and could I find any bulbs at this time of night... even the garage had sold out of only them ones Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, the guy on the F reg red and white bike who passed me just before Tesco's in Chepstow (heading towards Lydney), your tail lights aren't working Thumbs Up

Sure he didn't turn them off to make the point to you?
Was his headlight definitely still on?

Only reason I knew it was a biker was the single headlight in the middle of the lane behind me... as always anything approaching fast behind I'll pull over a bit and let them overtake (unless it's a car (or unlikely event of something bigger), of course), his headlight was still on as he passed, and almost positive it was on when he went off ahead.... and unless he felt the need to leave his headlight off about a half mile ahead on an unlit road to make his point.... no... his tail lights were definitely out.

The thing I don't understand with mine though.... there's 2 bulbs, both worked earlier this evening (damn didn't realise the time, OK yesterday evening)... but about 2 hours later both blew at the same time

So a guy telling you your lights weren't working properly had lights that weren't working properly? Laughing

Yep... that's about the size of it.

Just goes to show we have the same strict maintenance routine.... i.e. the bike starts, it must be fine Rolling Eyes

I was more cheesed off at not being able to find bulbs at midnight.. even from a garage Evil or Very Mad

I would kick up fuck with Shell, Texaco, BP et al.

That is outrageous.

I was steaming mad one night when I couldn't find a fresh loaf in an ESSO station. Mad

I expect he had his lights on as he approached you, hence you saw his headlight... then simply turned them off as he passed you to make the point. Because that's what I'd do.

Maybe, but why would he not put them back on again afterwards?

This was where he passed and pointed to his back light.... he slowed for the traffic lights, I indicated just after the junction to turn right, if he had noticed that then why would he not have put his lights on again as it's a pretty straight road he was well away from the lights and still hadn't put them on... and that ain't the brightest of roads down that way

Maybe they already knew their own tail light wasn't working but didn't really give a flying fook?

Not as good as my good dead on Sunday. The car in front had left the rear offside door open, and it was opening wide going round a right hand bend.

I wasn't going to say anything, until I over took and saw the kids in the back.

Pulled her over, and shut her door for her. Thumbs Up

Offside?
Off the side of what?

Can you be more Pacific? This is an International forum M8.

Do you mean Right side (for those countries where they drive on the Left hand side of the road. i.e. UK, India, South Africa etc.) or the Left side (for those countries where they drive on the Right hand side of the road. i.e. The Americas, France, Italy etc.)?

more to the point, how the fuck do you drive along and not realise one of the doors is swinging open?! would have thought the draft/door wafting about in the mirrors or the terrified screams of the children in the back would have given it away

The simple short-term solution is to simply adjust the rear brake light switch sufficiently for it to be always on, and find yourself a new bulb (s) when its possible. If you're riding late at night and can't easily get one this is a very practical solution which could save a tug or a rear-end shunt...

It would have been a problem if I was going for a late night jolly, but since I was just going to the shops and back I wasn't too worried as I knew the local car shop would have sorted me out the next morning (turns out the bulbs were 75p each, so I got 4... then at least I have a couple I can carry around in case of emergencies)... also if I was stopped I genuinely didn't know they were out... last time I checked they were working fine (OK so that was probably last month or thereabouts).

Interesting as the brake light idea sounds... not sure how well that would work.... my brake lights are a lot brighter, then there's the problem of slowing down for any reason (or having to brake hard with a car behind).... no one is going to know you are braking in the first place, so it could end up rather messy

If its pitch black and your miles from anywhere with no spare bulb adjusting the brake light is a good short term fix and preferable to no rear illumination, matters not that its brighter and saves a pull or possible shunt. I mean the primary concern riding at night in possibly poorly lit roads or bad conditions like rain and fog is being seen, the brake light is a secondary issue.
