I've just got a call from a pub that I handed my CV in to and they want me to come in for an interview next week. If I get the job I'll probably be working all through freshers and it's gonna be mostly students that I'll be serving.
Has anyone else had an interview for a pub? What kind of questions can I expect?
I've got a week so I'll try to learn some basic cocktail recipes and stuff that might give me a slight edge.
Any advice would be much appreciated, I really need this job...

Give the impression of being affable and gregarious but mature and responsible.

Don't make jokes about drinking the profits.

Be able to do basic maths and remember bar prices because despite having a modern till with single entries for each drink they go down occasionally and they won't want a bunch of dribbling bar staff going "ermmmm" if someone wants a drink.

It's also a more physical job than you might imagine, unless they have a dedicated staff member to fetch and carry from the cellar, change the barrels, etc. so don't break into a sweat opening the door.

In short; You'll need to be chatty, without wasting time nattering, physically fit, without challenging the landlord's alpha-male status, and intelligent without giving the impression you'll be bored in five minutes.

Also, you'll increase your prospects by becoming an early 20's, stacked, blonde female.

Mental arithmetic, you need it.

I once lost a bar job* despite having big tits, a nice smile and being chatty BECAUSE my mental arithmetic wasn't up to scratch.

Soon solved that.
Got another job, in a better bar Laughing Thumbs Up

*LONG before digital tills, but as Nexus points out, you still need it.

Anyone i've interviewed that can already make a Margherita, Cosmopolitan, Mojito and Basic Martini's will have an edge. Those are the basic cocktails everyone sells and will be more or less the same anywhere you go. Maybe get on Youtube & look up a few tutorial vids.

If its a typical student bar I cant imagine cocktails are that big a deal but it will help you if already know the basics. Others they might do are Long Island Iced Tea and variations of the basic Collins.

Other than that, be yourself. If you try & be anything your not it will be really hard to keep up the charade if they hire you!

If you think it'll help let me know & ill pm you some basic cocktail recipes.. Though theres no substitute for hands-on training and you dont soak much up just looking at a list of ingredients.

edit: student bar = I.D them before you take em home Wink

As long as youre willing to learn and reasonably friendly youre likely to get a job. Dont lie and say you know how to change barrels etc if you dont.

Chances of needing to make a cocktail are slim to none. You will be required to make a million vodka & coke/lemonade, shots of Sambuca or whatevers cheapest, and pull a half decent pint of the cheapest lager (Fosters or Carling).

Also with regards to the cocktails what sort of pub is it? If its a rough and ready pub that doesnt have them on their menu then theres no need to know how to make them. Dont mention them.

You should be fine.

No that's not the pub I'm looking at Laughing
They've got a good 2 for 5.50 deal on cocktails which I've used many times since I've been to uni Cool It's basic stuff like cosmo, mojito, cuba libre, long island etc. The pub is nothing fancy but it's not a shit hole either.
When I handed in my CV and mentioned I could work freshers they pretty much said: Oh nice I'll put you at the top of the pile then! So hopefully the fact that I've got an interview means I'm already close to getting it..
I'll be myself and hope they go for it Thumbs Up
