Today marks the day I have hit 10,000 miles on my gsxr!

So far there hasn't been any major accidents and am still excited when I wake up for my commute.

Thought I would share what I have done to it in the time owning it.

Bought it at 9k miles and so far have spent on maintenance:

1 service from dealer - £250
Service done myself - £70
New chain & sprockets - £150 fitted
New tyres - £200 fitted
New reg/rec - £100 fitted

Added the following for my own comfort/taste:

Akra Exhaust - £120
HID headlight - £28
Heated grips - £45
Power commander 3 - £100
Alarm - £20
R&G crash bits - £50
K&N filter - £35
Double bubble screen - £25
Sat nav holder/12v socket - £40

Bits need doing:

New brake pads
New grips
Custom map
Valve clearances
Maybe injector clean?!
Track day

Have I add value? Prob Not a sausage but I don't give a toss

Looking forward to the next 10k miles Thumbs Up

Coming close to 77k on the Varadero... MOT is due and its starting to show its age and abuse. Might need to fettle at some point. Rear shock appears to be stock Laughing

I clean my bikes once a year, for the MOT or when I sell them.

It's a con. They just get dirty again.

That 200k CBR is something spectacular really. No idea what servicing the guy has done. I've changed the oil on my Vara and its coming up to 20k in my ownership. I won't do the valves until its too late.

He used bike oils until 5k miles then used car oils at 5k intervals ever since apparently, as of a month ago it's done 261,547 miles according to the comments.

Op's bike has cost him £1.23 per mile without fuel, tax, mot insurance costs etc if anyone cares.

I use cheap arse 10w40, I'd re-use the stuff people throw from their bikes after oil changes Laughing

I'd like to know what he replaced on the bike to get it that far. 100k is my aim on the Varadero, that would be nice. If the engine blows before hand I'm going to pay someone to fit a slightly bigger engine in there, GT250 or another low powered V twin.

You should look into the vtr250 range (including magna 250), I bet those engines would pretty much bolt right in to a varadero they are around 33bhp for most of them and would be hard pushed to spot the difference since the engine is pretty much the least noticeable bit on those varadero's.

you bought the bike with 9k right? so you've only done 1000miles to make 10k and spent £1233.

Unless you meant the bike has now got 19k on it, and I just misunderstood.

I've got to 65,000 miles and my poxy rear header exhaust gasket is blowing again. That's the third one fitted in 42,000 miles.

My Varadero. It seems a common problem, always on the hidden and inaccessible rear down pipe. I should really buy one of the metal gaskets someone on one of the Vara forums knocks up for a few quid and put it in and have done with it.

I would be looking into making an extra exhaust mount point for the rear downpipe, if the gasket keeps blowing it must be moving slightly from the vibration/ pulsing.

You're probably on the right track.

I did think it may be the extra heat being the back pot out of the air flow making the gasket degrade. The front downpipe gasket is as from the factory, as is every other gasket in the many many joints.

And diesel oil for the last 50K.

I guess that answers the "Will car oil screw up my bike?" question pretty comprehensively. Wink

fantastic so you've got a bike that cost you nothing to keep on the road, had it modified just the way you want it, not only that but you make a profit.

How many miles would it take for the bike to pay for itself with the 7.2 p per mile profit?

Keep it going as long as the cbr guy and you are golden, 200k miles would be 1440000 pence or £14400 profit.

It will probably take me around 3.5-4 years to recover the bikes cost.

But that's assuming I spend as much for mods and without NCD. So I reckon around 2.5-3 years!

Not bad!!
