Hi guys,

My ZZR600 has done this a couple of times where it will cut out when I stop at the end of the road at a give way and struggle to start at this point. Prior to this the bike will have started fine.

The battery is at least 3 years old and shows 12.60v when hooked up to the bike. When pressing the starter the voltage will go up to 11.08v. Once started the battery goes up to normal voltage expected from the charging system on the bike.

It's worth noting that once I start the bike after it dying then the bike will be able to run for hours with no problem. Both times this has happened the bike has been cold, but I know I have used the correct amount of choke and the bike should not die due to this. (I've been riding the bike daily for 5 years.

I have a new air filter and NGK iridium spark plugs which have been sitting in my room so I am going to fit them tonight.

I do suspect the problem is lack of fuel (I don't mean not enough in the tank as there is plenty). I was just wondering what you guys think?

Thanks for any help.

mine sometimes does it in humid conditions if I've not knocked the choke off soon enough / not turned the choke off fully

11.08v seems low for cranking voltage, it suggests that the battery is possibly on its last legs. As the ZZR has a fuel pump, I'd personally try a new battery.

But obviously I'm no oracle so that may not be the issue...

thanks Black Sheep, it's possibly a case of the bike just being cold, old plugs and then an old battery for the struggle to restart after it cutting out. It's never really done it before apart from today and once last week.

Thanks J.M. As you have said I do suspect you are right about the battery needing changed. The battery was ran empty in 2010 after I crashed and left the light on while I was in hospital. (I knew it was on but didn't care at the time). I think over 3 years is probably good going for this battery. Thumbs Up

As always with these things, it could be a multitude of different reasons. Battery doesn't sound too bad to me but could be on its way out. However, it could also be the fuel pump relay on its last legs as I've heard this is a common (ish) problem and would give the symptoms you describe.
