Lane Hoggers to be deported

17 August - MAG welcomes the introduction of fixed penalties for those who hog the
middle lanes of motorways and use mobile phones while driving.
While MAG is not generally in the business of encouraging legislation, the organisation does
recognise the good sense of dealing with the issues that have been singled out for
treatment.
Middle lane hogs and those who use mobile phones on the move are a menace on our
roads and particularly threaten the safety of anyone on two wheels.
While police were already empowered to deal with these issues, the amendment to place
them in the fixed penalty category brings a fresh focus to them that will probably be helpful.

The left hand lane on most motorways is now known as the "Texting lane" It is the ONLY time you will see a BMUU in that lane and not in the special BMUU lane on the far right near the central reservation.

I'm pleased that (in the full spiel) they acknowledge that the only actual change is in making FPN bribes available for careless and inconsiderate.

But then I'm disappointed that they focus on the same headline "offences" as everyone else, without noting either that:

#1 It'll make sod all difference to copper workloads.

I'm sure some women have been instructed to drive in the middle lanes by their husbands in the belief that it is safer for them.

Perhaps more training offered to those who transgress, as they certainly seem to like talking on their phone whilst driving in the middle lane.
This morning was quite hilarious as there was a slow line up the middle and outside lanes. As there was nothing on the inside lane, I may have accidently 'under' taken everyone, on my way past

Not to get too Krad, but just yesterday on the way back from the shops, I spied an oncoming V or W reg Corolla.

That drifts steadily from her lane, through a right turn lane, until half her car is on my side of the road, casual as you like.

No indication at all.

As I swerved like a boss to avoid her continuing the drift into a lazy, completely oblivious right turn into the side road that I was passing, what did I see?

Headscarf peering meekly over the wheel, moustached husband gesticulating wildly from the passenger seat, horde of assorted children bouncing around in the back.

It would be much harder to stereotype this behaviour if they'd stop doing it.

I suggest, one of the main reasons that people stick to the middle lane is the difficulty they have when trying to pull out of the inside lane in order to overtake a truck. If other drivers are not going to give them sufficient room to pull out of the inside lane, do not be surprised if when getting into the middle lane they tend to stay there.

What is needed is better – more considerate – driving on motorways.

The Germans do it much better. They know that if someone indicates to move from a slower lane into a faster lane, that is what they are going to do and they slow down. But they do expect the driver to move back into the slower lane once the overtaking is completed – and that is what they do.

Lane discipline and consideration for other drivers is much better. It has to be with vehicle speed varying between 60 and 175mph on some motorways consideration and respect is vital.

BTW, 'foreign' drivers/riders seem to get the message quickly and fall in line with the German way of driving. I suspect that 'foreign' drivers/riders in this country just fall in line with the sloppy way we use our motorways.

In fog conditions advice I had was to get into the outside lane on a motorway. That way you will not plough into the back/under a lorry or have one mate with your rear end.

The advice was from a Scot so some translation was required but I believe he was sober. Goes by the name of Jackie Stewart and apparently knows a thing or two about driving quickly
