I just picked up a YAM FZX750 (88), apart from it needs tidying up cosmetically and other than the usual maintenance, anything I should watch out for ??

Hi

I have an FZ, which is pretty much the same very tough engine. Gearbox is likely the first thing to wear out, but it will take a long time. Bering behind the front sprocket will fail if you have the chain too tight though

All the best

Keith

Good solid bikes, quirky looks but I actually like it. Surprisingly for a down sleeved 1000 engine it pulls very well from low revs.
If its on the original down pipes and silencers, they will probably be as holy as the Pope. There are stainless replacements but they do not look as good. If its been stood then the carbs will definitely need a thorough clean-out. Apart from the odd tyre sizes most of the FZ 750 / 1000 bits are still relatively readily available and cheap.

Thanks Guys !
I have noticed it's quite difficult getting it into Neutral (finding neutral) Sometimes it can take me 6 or 7 tries to locate it.
The upshift and downshift are ok, it's just the Neutral....
The downpipes are all original, as with majority of parts on the machine.
F&R brakes were upgraded by previous owner, so stops well although forks have a fair bit of dive.
As for the pick up, yep, smile from ear to ear for an older bike.
How do you spot a worn bearing behind the sprocket ? What are the symptoms ?
I'll drop a foto on here when I get time
Cheers, Neil

Hi

No real symptom to watch out for until too late to save it. Expect oil leaks and a load of noise when knackered. Trouble is that it is a full engine strip to replace the bearing.

All the best

Keith
