When I bought my bike it had some rather wonky reflective rim tape on and i've finally got round to doing something about it. It had clearly been on for a long time as bits had come away from the wheel and it generally looked untidy and a bit of a mess. It was quite difficult to remove as it was really well stuck on and when removing it only small bits came off at a time where it had gone brittle in places and just snapped under any pulling pressure! I eventually resorted to using a little heat to assist in removing it.

Once the tape was off, the rims looked clean but a little bare.

After browsing the tinterwebs, I finally decided that I would remove the paint and polish the thin lip around the rim of the rim....

Using wet dry paper of a low grade to remove the paint from the rim did take some time, but eventually got there.

One side down, one to go - then for the rear wheel!

Just need to get some finer grade wet dry to get it extra smooth before polishing now and I think it will look good against the black innner rim and matching the alloy engine casings the CB1300 has. Just need to stock up on the autosol!

I don't think i'd be able to control the drill as well I could by rubbing down by hand, to get a clean smooth line between the metal and the paint - I know i'd make a right old mess of it! If I was going to strip the whole wheel back to metal, then I would have probably done just that, but I wanted to be a bit different. Very Happy

Yeah you could be wright. You did a good job though. They are a fucker to keep that way though, mine loo dull in no time. When i get round to painting the bike the rims are getting done as i find cleaning them a pain in the arse and i cant hide them with rim tape as i hate the stuff.

Your going to have to polish them every other week to keep them looking good, had the same on an old car and all the road crap/ brake dust/salt knackers them really quickly.

No but it looks better than polished lips.

Polished bits on bikes in this country are a big no no. The VTR I owned had polished lower fork legs, full polished rims and polished swing arm. It was an utter bastard to keep clean and took hours upon hours of time.

Purely a matter of opinion - everyone's different hey!

I prefer the polished lips myself, else I wouldn't have spent time doing it in the first place. It suits the bike and compliments the other alloy parts. Plus, I don't mind spending a little time polishing bits and bobs every other weekend - the bike is purely for pleasure - I don't commute on it.
