Thought you’d like this.

Last night, I rang up Direct line to get a quote on my van insurance as it is due this month.

Renewal came through at £380, the GoComparethe MoneySUperMeerkat sites have given me prices starting about £320ish, so when I get a bit from DL, saying that they will give me 70%NCD and a further 20% introductory offer, I thought, what have I got to loose.

After about 10 mins of questions on the van, my driving history, the wife’s driving history, etc. the guy comes back with :-

Quote for insurance, £1049, plus insurance tax
No windscreen cover
No protected NCD
£650 excess
No courtesy van if in an accident.

I actually laughed down the phone at this guy and asked him if it was a joke?

My son who passed his test last month has managed to get insurance for his car for only £1300, so what the hell are they playing at?

He was deadly serious and sounded offended at my reaction.

Does anyone actually use these people to insure anything? As every time I call for a price on car/van/bike/house insurance, they quote stupid prices.

Mike

Insurance is a bit of a lottery it seems.
Mostly they all come in around the same price +- 10% then there are the more expensive brokers who for some reason use more expensive companies/take more of a cut/have limited margins for tailoring quotes.

I use the cheapest (unless I have dire experience with the brokers before).
Check the terms and conditions and more important find out who is actually underwriting the policy. (The Insurer)

I was with Bennetts for a while then swapped when I changed my bike as they couldn't quote me happy.
I ended up with MCE (who are diabolical in customer service) but cheap.
Now they are not so cheap for the same cover same bike same body. So WTF?
I'm now quoted £152 by Motorcycle Direct.

Go compare are NEVER any good 'for me' I ALWAYS get the best deal using moneysupermarket. For what it's worth.

It's their way of saying for some reason they're not really interested in insuring you.

As a 20-something year-old in a 525i (albeit an old one) I used to get quotes from Norwich Union in the order of 20k a year. It was more entertaining than being told "we can't provide you with a quote".

That's fuck all....

I got several quotes for £100K to insure me on a S1000RR. Cool
