So, apparently charging people extra rent for under occupying social housing is against human rights.

What a kick in the teeth eh? Perhaps we should take our complaints to the rubbish heaps of Mumbai.

Not strictly true - where the issue lies is that there isn't enough appropriately sized housing for those who wish to downsize to avoid the charge - which they who are not accountable but like to be obeyed deem as an infringement of a basic right to housing.

If you register intent to downsize, and specify what you wish to move so, as long as it is reasonable and realistic, where is the problem in not charging them until such a property comes available? Or even swapping houses if a family is overcrowded and another is underoccupying?

If you want to be a complete and utter c*nt who thinks they deserve a 3 bedroomed home despite living alone, you should be charged the subsidy for your greed. Same for oldies to an extent.

Agreed and very good points.

We tend to look at things like this from an urban perspective. If we shift the perspective to somewhere like the Welsh valleys you quickly realise that there are no one bedroom places and two bedroom places are extremely rare. When you add to this that having a living room 'may' be considered another bedroom then potentially everything is a minimum three bedroom house. So if there are no one/two bedroom places available what exactly does a person trying to downgrade do?

If you can't downgrade to a smaller place and cannot afford the rent then you are faced with being made homeless through no fault of your own but rather by a system that financially penalises house builders for building smaller houses.

This is why it it could potentially infringe human rights and I for one agree it does.

Of course if we manage to empty all of these rural houses we then end up with and this should not come as a shock a load of empty family houses that no one can afford to move into due to no work in the area.

Unfortunately there is no single answer to the housing crisis other than build new houses of various sizes.

There is also the issue that some one bedroom properties have higher rents than a 3 bedroomed house.
But the rent would be paid fully on the 1 bed.

From the interview I heard on the Today program on radio 4 this morning, the Brazillian bint appears to have some sort of axe to grind and has come over here stirring the shite.

She came across as a wittering, over-excited foriegn hippy type.

The Government minister they interviewed could barely contain his rage. She hasn't apparently spoken to them about the policy at all, doesn't know what the policy is called and hasn't met with any government ministers. She had no official permission to come into the country to do this investigation and didn't inform the ogvernment she was coming. She has also made a press release on the subject when her report isn't due out until January next year and has been photographed with nototiously left wing newspaper executives.

I confidently predict her UK visa will be withdrawn and she will be shipped back with some rapidity to wherever she came from to answer some difficult questions from her employers.

They need to focus on disscoragement of reproduction - especially amoungst the poor/un-employed. This in turn will sort this bedroom crisis.

Brazilian yeah?
Maybe Special Branch/The Met could discharge a firearm somewhere near her.

Let's case study Rio/Sao Paulo Flavelas

" small globe iconThe slum housing problem

It is estimated that substandard or slum housing occupies 70% of São Paulo’s area – approximately 1,500 square kilometres. Two million people, 20% of the population, live in favelas, while over half a million people live in converted older homes and even factories in São Paulo’s inner core, which are known as corticos. Often whole families share a single room, which may lack electricity and plumbing. Rat and cockroach infestations are common. More than 60% of the population growth in the 1980s is considered to have been absorbed by the favelas."

https://www.geocases2.co.uk/saopaulo2.htm

The plane flies over the Flavelas on it's approach to the airport. First time I saw it I thought it was the landfill. Smile

There wasnt a housing problem until the regen bollocks started.

I think the idea is that people let out their spare rooms to make up the income...

I rent privately and get no support for my rent. I rent a 4 bedroom house. It was only £30 a month more than all the three bedroom houses, but it had loads more land, parking space, front and back gardens, a side drive, large kitchen and lounge. Three of the bedrooms are liveable spaces that can fit a bed, wardrobe, set of drawers and have somewhere to stand in while you get dressed and the like. The 4th bedroom just about fits a single bed in it, you wouldn't really get a wardrobe in it, or if you did it would be so small it would be useless, you definitely wouldn't get a set of drawers in and as for standing in it with space around you to get dresses, well that would be a resounding no. It is a storage cupboard at best and id used as such. I have myself and my two children, one of each gender.
When I went around the three bedroom houses the third bedroom was as how I have described my 4th bedroom. So in the end for just a few pound more I have got a proper sized family home. You will find this is the case with so many other 3/4 bedroom houses.
