I've thought for ages that we're not evolving properly any more, that's where all my extreme views and concepts come from, not only cos of medical intervention but also because we don't choose a mate with our instincts any more, we use emotions, intelligence or just plain drunkenness. Gone are the days when you could mate with the female if you survived the fight with your rival! Often enough now it's a one night stand resulting in a single mum. We've also got to consider overpopulation as a problem which is linked to it, we need fewer but 'better' kids being born rather than loads of average or below average kids.
Here's some ideas to fix it:

IQ tests in late teens and if you get less than 100 you get sterilised.

Kim Robinsons idea of giving everyone a right to have 0.75 children, so when you're in a couple you can have 1 child and have a 'licence' to another 0.5 children - you can then either sell your 0.5 licence to get some money or buy a half from another couple to have 2 kids. Rich people can have loads of kids and poor people can sell their licences to go and buy fags and booze.

Maybe just requiring a licence to have children, you have to prove yourself with qualifying criteria that decides whether or not you get a one-child licence, two-child licence etc.

Close all the hospitals except for A&E. Sick people die, healthy people live. Actually that's a bit retarded, maybe a better idea is that if you have certain diseases that are known to be hereditary then you get sterilised or have your baby licence removed.

Plenty of species can remain consistent for long periods of time, then be forced to evolve fairly quickly as habitats change.

Human evolution is by nature going to be slow thanks to our fairly long breeding cycles (even with a grandmother at 23, it's still a lot longer than the yearly or quicker some mammals manage.)

On the idiocracy* thing, so far it does seem that it's often nurture rather than nature, though rather hard to really tell. Could well argue that it's still evolution, even if not a genetic one.
Certainly that certain types of people are more likely to procreate more while others are now putting it off for longer does suggest an 'evolution' may be occurring.

*I can't remember the title, but there was a decent-enough book which had a rather similar concept - in this case it was a colony planet which dug out it's FTL ship to see how other planets were doing, eventually ending up on Earth to find it filled with idiots - though in this case there was a 'masterclass' ruling from behind the scenes. A planet they visited (maybe the first?) had gender roles reversed and the main character was 'raped' by a wilful woman.

But our long maturation and possibly gestation length determines our evolution as well. Humans are one of the most adaptable of any animals.
It is human intelligence and our ability to adapt to change in environment, diet and cetera which made humans 'successful'. Even when you consider that humans are not the most prolific breeders or 'strongest' species on the planet.

I'm smart, but don't want kids. It's because I'm smart that I don't want kids, ergo, my 'smart' genes (if such a thing exists) won't be passed on.

Why do people think evolution makes species "smart"? It doesn't. It just makes them change to suit the conditions they live in.

Evolution takes hundreds of generations. You're not going to witness evolution in humans in your own lifetime. We've changed the world to suit us but it doesn't mean we're not going to evolve. Just because we can describe it quickly doesn't mean it happens quickly.

In "survival of the fittest" the word "fittest" simply means most suited to the current conditions, not necessarily "best". Change the conditions (as we have) and you just evolve in a slightly different direction. Civlilisations come and go; we've not really "evolved" in a genetic sense since the Romans; it takes much longer than that. Come back in a million years and see if humans are the same then as they are now. Bet you a fiver they're not.

There is evidence that we can evolve noticeably within a 'lifetime'.

Study in China have indicated that the average height has increased due to population adopting a western diet.

https://my.telegraph.co.uk/expat/chelsea_girl_in_china/10140877/the-chinese-are-getting-taller/

Maybe not genetic change per se and probably due to better health but it is the beginning of 'change'.

MacDonalds, Burger-king and KFC IS EVOLUTION. Shocked Smile

Nature WOULD be the cause if people paid for their mistakes, i think

As common sense surely comes from some finding out the hard way and others learning the lesson..?

But nowadays common sense seems to be disappearing as you say.

No one seems responsible for their actions any more, it's always someone else's fault or they got an 'Illness'... Rolling Eyes

Check out the "i'm so wrapped up in MY world that YOU have to watch
out for ME"..attitude which has never been more prevalent.

As an example... the idiots texting away merrily without even looking to see if road is safe to cross, etc

Toot and disturb them and YOU are in the wrong.... Embarassed
"I was fcuking using MY phone, didn't YOU see me..... Evil or Very Mad "

assholes, the lot of em Middle Finger

but yeah, common sense...missing from so many lives.. Laughing

You are doing it wrong ya cnut....

You need one of these.

It is better than a K&N for filtering. And with one of these fitted 'disturb' them is not the correct term.

(Ignore the 'murican' banter in the clip.)

Well exactly. It isn't evolution any more than is in the west getting obese is evolution. Evolution is a gradual change in a species' genetic makeup caused by the death or inability to reproduce of those less-suited to the conditions in which a species lives. Growing bigger because you've been given good food isn't a genetic change. By definition no evolution can occur in one lifetime because your DNA is your DNA from birth to death. Certain circumstances cause mutation but that isn't the same thing.

Arguing that you can see evolution in a lifetime by presenting something that isn't evolution is logically like me arguing global-warming is happening by presenting you with road-death statistics.

When everyone knows it is exactly the opposite. Look at the hike in road death Stats in winter time. Shocked

I turned into a road the other day for a woman with pram in one hand, toddler holding onto pram, and phone in the other hand to just step clean out into the road in front of me because she was texting. So shes in charge of two children and because shes so busy texting she couldn't be arsed to look at the road and see the car coming. Luckily, I had slowed down for the turn and I stopped without killing any of them, I didn't even beep, cos I thought I'd startle the poor kids. She barely even noticed she had just nearly got her two kids killed. I'm beginning to come around to tbourner's mention of licences and IQ tests.

What option was there in the 1600s when there was no other ideas about it? You had the choice of, believe what everyone else does or not believe because ... it doesn't feel right? Atheism became a lot more understandable when other theories (used in the scientific context, not idiot context) came about to explain the natural world around us

I install a Stebel as soon as I get a new (for me) bike.

But no stebel can match the effect of a 1600cc V-twin Straight-piped backfire.

Damn right Laughing

How I've avoided a Section 59 seizure I'll never know.

On Thursday night two fat birds near Sheffield arena were on the receiving end of the loudest bang I've EVER heard. The screams were divine.

You're a bad man Keggy Hander. Laughing

I bet the theatrical screams were just to give an impression that they were delicate little things. They probably would have let you shag them. (While your mates watched.)

I used to do that with an old car I used to keep going in petrol. My mate thought it was awfully cool so he tried it when he was in his dad's car.
He did it about three times then blew the back box off the car. Not holed.... Missing, blown off the hoowur.
It was an old BMW and it cost him a week's wages to buy one off a scrappy.

Shoving a pram or buggy into the road in front of you is standard mongerating procedure. Take note for when you've popped yours out, it's like having a white cane that pays you child benefit.
