So... Me and my mate have finally been able to remove the carbs, airbox and all the bolts holding the engine on... We just have to remove the engine...

Now, do we need to remove the shaft drive/swingarm in order to remove the engine? or were Kawasaki /sensible/ and is it able to be removed through elbow grease and brute force? I don't care if we damage the engine as I'm replacing it... Or is there a knack to it?

Real helpful.

I can't offer advice on that specific bike but according to my manual the engine on my XJ900 will come out without touching the shaft or swingarm so if you are worried about where the shaft meets the engine I'm guessing you are ok.

I've not got the GT550 manual, but I do have one for the 750 - I'll have a look later and see if there's any pointers that may have been a common design between the two.

Quite believeable, contradictory to popular belief.

Cheers shaggy. We've been trying a fair bit and haven't found a workshop/service manual online...

You may need to remove the rear wheel, final drive and withdraw the drive shaft. I doubt the swinger has to come out.

This is what the 750 manual says; I'll see if I can find my scanner.

Here's the Hayne's Book of Lies for air cooled 750s, 1980-90 pages for engine removal - hopefully it might shed some light on the 550.

Apologies for the potential digression, but what are these bikes like - as in, general reputation, reliability / rideability (not interested in speed)? I appreciate the GT550's looks won't be everyone's thing, but for one reason or another they really do it for me (overly skinny back tyre not withstanding!). I love that '80s naked UJM vibe, and imo the GT550 does it as good, if not better than, any.

The Kwaka Gt's are good, solid bikes, most will have high mileages by now but they seem to keep soldiering on. The GPz550 is the one to get tho - great little bike in its day.

I agree, GPz is the best sport touring bike out there, ever made I'd say. Cruising, traveling, flat out running, that bike can handle it all. Smile
