530 quid plus vat for a camshaft clamp for a 250cc single cylinder burgman scooter Laughing this is a bit of alloy you can hold in the palm of your hand ffs

They're also machined to match a head. I'm surprised you can even buy one tbh.

If you broke one on the R6 all manuals specifically stated that the head would also need to be replaced.

The component is cnc machined, bolts on and is pinned so they are all the same, Suzuki also want to try to sell me a bare cylinder head as well but it is not needed on a short camshaft on the 250cc single, the cam is only 5 inches long. Either way you look at it a basic cylinder head minus valve gear and cam is a total rip of at 636 quid plus postage when I can buy a GN250 cylinder head complete with rockers, valves and springs for 268 quid new.

they are machined to match, not as bolt together pieces.

They are precision pieces that require to be matched, manufacturing tolerances between 2 different ones can kill the camshaft

I have changed similar before with no bother, I can see it making a difference on multi cylinder bikes that have several bearing faces but this single cylinder bike only has 2 bearing faces, I just priced a new part as used are like hens teeth for this model.

Manufacturing tolerances are very good today, you will find that more will fit perfectly than will not. That said, Phil is right they are bolted up and machined as an assembly.

What's broke on it. Strikes me that the part would still work if it was snapped across the two thin bits.

One of the rocker arm bar retainers has broken (bottom right of picture) the previous owner though that the 4 retaining bolts were the tappet adjustments and loosened them off allowing the clamp to move and break, I do agree with what Phil said but in this case the matching faces are not so critical since there are only 2 and both can be made independent of each other, just trying to keep the costs down as welding is not an option.

Why is welding not an option?

Guy who did my welding was building up a fireblade engines crank cases and then re drilling galleries.

It's worth a look at. You could post it to him for him to look at and see what he can do, it's worth a shot if it's scrap to you.

The rocker pin location in this case must be perfect and the same stud hole carries the oil to the cam pins, the pat that broke of is tiny and would most likely just melt or distort if tig welded.

Not if bolted down, pre-heated and done properly.

As I said, if it's just scrap, what's the harm in sending it to him and asking if he can do anything or not. Better shot than £500.

Indeed, I will give it a go, thanks for the help. I took the broken parts to a welder but he reckoned the small broken part would just melt if tig welded but anything is worth a go . Shame a big company like Suzuki does not sell their bolt on parts at sensible prices as this bike has only 13 k on the clock and is in otherwise excellent condition but worthless due to a sad lack of spares available for a very simple engine.

Still doesnt go anywhere near as to why it costs so much other than blackmail (only we do the part, so pay up or fuck you). Its a motorcycle part, not a super duper transmitter on the Hubble Space Station.
