I think she was trying to tell him at the end he didn't actually need to pay $60 - that's how fines usually work, max of say £60 or £30 if you pay within 2 weeks.

Pretty much nailed it when he said that.

An Australian government department saying they don't accept legal tender is basically like them saying 5c coins have no value in their whole economy, or that they don't want the money so they forfeit the fine.

Like most countries, they don't have to accept it above a certain limit. In the UK they have these limits:

If they really wanted to be difficult they could probably fine him for littering, keep the change and demand he still makes full payment.

I've had someone at work try to pay £15 fuel in 2 + 1p's. I told him it had to be sorted and counted as he didn't actually know how much there was in this huge bottle. He sat at the table and counted out 15quid organised in stacks of 10p, and i accepted it no arguments. I think it was a failed protest or something! He spent over an hour at it while i was doing other things as the coins wouldn't pour easily out. Laughing His loss not mine

Something about fraud I presume. Yet you can legally buy a mars bar with a £50 note.... which is significantly more dodgy.

Last week I had a customer pay for £35.76 worth of stuff in change, I was summoned to count it. It ate up half an hour of my day counting it and I thanked him for ensuring we wouldn't run low on change over the weekend. Thumbs Up
