My monitor is showing its age now (5yrs old, got to love Samsung) but it's still nice although it only has the one DVI port. Currently have to switch cords (HDMI -> DVI cables) manually when I want to switch to my PS3... Only going to get more annoying when the PS4 comes out and I play games a lot more. So what could I do to avoid having to pointlessly upgrade my monitor? It also has a VGA port but the screen flickers while using it, and it looks noticeably crap.

I have the same sort of issue, because of there being no HDMI port on the monitor, my ps3 is connected with a hdmi cable into the ps3 and dvi into the monitor, which means to get sound i have to use the scart with my surround sound setup, meaning the quality of sound is poor and i can't use the monitor remote to adjust the volume.

i do have a dvi > hdmi adapter though

The hdmi switch box to let your change the input to the monitor is the easy part, they are readily available can be remote controlled and are cheap, you could even chuck an hd freeview box on too.

Converting the hdmi output cable to dvi AND audio so you can turn the volume up on the monitor for all the devices is the difficult part,

A few different one's are available on ebay though, these gefen ones are discontinued according to the firms website.

convertors to go the other way are cheap (dvi+audio to hdmi) but unfortunately not so with the way you would need it.

I have messaged a few sellers of this type to ask if they are bi directional but I doubt it.

If you can live with going hdmi to vga + audio the options are much much cheaper, though only a few are hdcp compliant.

It is probably possible to make your own cable along the lines of a bogo hdmi to dvi cable but pick the audio outputs feeds into a seperate digital audio cable (spdif-toslink optical?)

something like this maybe, I know it isn't actually using the hdmi audio feed but you get the idea

Another option to sort the audio would be an hdmi AV surround sound receiver/ amp, from what I can tell they have a pass through for the video signal (some can convert to multiple video outputs too).

if you buy one with multiple inputs you don't have to bother with the hdmi switcher as the unit has one built in,

When you are all wired up take the hdmi out and fit a hdmi to dvi adaptor jobs a gooden and you should have full surround sound for your pc, console, hd freeview everything.

these two are starting at 99p and have all sorts of video in/out option like component rca, s-video, but most importantly switching hdmi inputs.

or something like this basically it's a switcher box that can either dual screen one input to both outputs or switch both output to display any of the four inputs you choose, from the description it lets you send audio out over spdif/ optical for surround sound.
