Evening chaps & chapesses,

Just a quick question for ya all.

I'm thinking of going to look/possibly buy a bike to use solely as a track bike as it's advertised locally to me. I've done an HPI check & its come back listed as a cat B write off Shocked (which, as far as I'm aware, should never be put back on the road & should be scrapped or used for spares), & it's also stolen recovered (which the owner did mention, but did not mention the CAT B part in the ad)

Now the seller says the CAT B classification is due to it being stolen recovered. However, stolen/recovered are normally classed as a 'CAT X' aren't they?

He says its all straight & will pass an MOT no problems, but that's where the problem lies, it'll NEVER pass an MOT due to the CAT B classification.

The seller does not have the V5 & it can't be ridden for a cheeky 'test ride' as it needs a new CDI unit.

I smell a rat, but what's your opinions?

Cheers for any constructive comments

Thumbs Up

Hi

The insurance write off categorys seem to be an insurance industry thing with no legal backing (despite the impression they try to give). Plenty of people have managed to get cat A or B bikes back on the road.

That said, from what you have said unless it is dirt cheap and you are certain about the recovered part of "stolen and recovered" I would run away.

All the best

Keith

Agreed, while there's nothing in law stopping you from doing it, it would have to be verrrry cheap for it to make sense, to the point where I wonder why you bothered HPIing it.

For one thing, the insurance cartel will reduce its value sharply when it comes to paying out any claim on it.

Track bike is the best use for it.

With no V5 I'd be worrying that the 'stolen recovered' part isn't exactly true, maybe just 'stolen' Laughing With a bike that sounds that dodgy, as the seller, I would have at least got the V5 sorted before I tried to flog it.

Pretty sure the write off thing is like the highway code?
There are two types of rules: "should" and "must" rules

Far as I know a Cat A "must" be destroyed entirely, and a Cat B "should" not be put on the road and "should" be broken for spares.

None of us have ever found anything in any statute making it an offence to use any vehicle on the road, as long as it's roadworthy, MOTd and insured.

Not only that, there are people who have got As and Bs back on the road. All the evidence points in the direction of a purely insurer created rule.

Although, I believe breakers yards agree to follow their industry code of conduct which then makes it illegal for them to resell As and Bs through some convoluted contract process...

Stand corrected then!

Lots of cat B track bikes about though! Is it legal if a salvage worker takes the bike as a personal track bike and passes it on in a non-related to the business transaction? Must be a loophole through which these machines slip through?
