It's a lovely looking bike, well done
Also a refreshing change from the usual cafe racer rebuilds that people have been churning out. More details about the build please. ____________________ stinkwheel: He had an animated .gif of a cat performing fellatio. It's not socially acceptable. Cheers Matt, well to start with there was the strip down, a lot of these bits were crud and didn't make it back onto the bike, including the swingarm that a had rusted through. The frame was de-tagged (with my trusty grinder) of all the bits I no longer wanted and sent for powder coating along with a new swingarm (second hand from ebay), wheel rims and hubs. Here she is in kit form:
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/14072012549.jpg
Got the frame and swingarm (and a few other bits) back from powder coating and started the rebuild. New Forsa shocks (235mm up from 185mm originals), new Renthal ultra low bars, new swingarm bushes and pivot bolt and new steering head bearings.
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/090820125921024x768.jpg
Onto the wheels. The tyres were perished and the rims and spokes were very rusty:
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/080720125381024x768-1.jpg
The rims and hubs were powder coated gloss black and I had two sets of stainless spokes made up with new nipples. Each wheel had four different spoke sizes. I laced the wheels myself, it took a while to get the hang of it, but I would recommend anyone to try it for themselves.
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/260720125671024x768-1.jpg
Once laced, I trued up the wheels using the old swingarm, a vice, a pencil and a bit of tape:
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/290720125731024x768.jpg
And here they are finished with their new shoes on:
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/310720125791024x768.jpg
The engine was a runner, but in a bit of a state. Mostly from very leaky tappet covers and age (32 years, 27,00 miles).
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/080720125311024x768-1.jpg
I ordered a full engine gasket and seal kit and stripped it down. Internally the engine was in good condition, so I just gave it a good clean, lapped the valves and re-assembled with the new seals and gaskets. Oh and a new stainless Allan bolt kit.
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/051020127851024x768.jpg
I polished up the side cases and covers and sprayed the rest black in matt black High temp paint:
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/100720125431024x768.jpg
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/100720125441024x768.jpg
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/SteveGreen123/131020128381024x768.jpg
In the end I didn't like the paint, so I repainted it with satin black high temp enamel.

Sidewinder, Shaggy, Clutchy and Matt B, cheers Gents, glad you like her. Matt, yeah I saw Harry Cole's show (great show) the lacing is a bit if a nightmare to begin with (2hrs first wheel, 1hr the second) but there are a couple of instructional videos on Youtube that really help (see laptop in background). ____________________ Build it, ride it, clean it, oil it, lock it, maintain it, love it. Next I got on with cleaning up the front forks. They were in a bit of a state, covered in years of grime and flaky lacquer. Luckily the chrome was perfect. I polished the lowers with my bench polisher and a mop attached to my electric drill. When I came to renew the fork oil, what came out looked like thick old milky coffee. They were drained, topped up and pumped several times, drained and then filled again. I then installed a set of black rubber gaiters for the look I was after.

The next job was to get the wheels on. New bearings were installed. The drum brake plates were polished up, new brake shoes installed, and the brake actuating arm was stripped, primed and sprayed gloss black. I also managed to find new castle nuts and stainless split pins for the axles.
The rear sprocket was replaced and new locking tabs fitted. I also managed to find a NOS centre stand on ebay, but it will not be on the finished bike, just the build.
And we have a roller :

Pepperami, Daverwheeler, bypass2, Chuffin Nora, Mark65 and Paddy, thanks for the kind words about the bike . Paddy, I have to agree, the SR250 was one of the ugliest bikes made in my opinion, but it was perfect for this project with a few tweaks. I was after a basic bike, twin shocks, drum brakes, air cooled, single cylinder four stroke, spoked wheels etc. I just needed to raise the back, drop the front, fit lower bars, a new seat and generally restore the rest. ____________________ Build it, ride it, clean it, oil it, lock it, maintain it, love it.
