I had narrowed my next commuter down to F800S/ST (belt), something not GS in the BMW R1xxx series (shaft), or maybe a CBF1000 (oily old chain). VFRs are nosing around the edges still, mind you Wink

Looking for a bit more power - occasionally find the bigger engined German saloons hard to keep up with off roundabouts etc on the Bandit, which can be embarrasing; good mpg if possible; reliability; possibly not chain drive to save daily maintainance/scotoiler fiddling. A bit more "character" than the Bandit would be nice, too.

The F800 is probably top of the list at moment for my head, my heart is decided yet Wink

I'm 6'4", by the way, so I don't fit sports bikes.

Anyhow a local advert for a Triumph Sprint ST 1050 caught my eye and I know next to sod all about them... how do they stack up to the list above?

GSXR1000?

Wink

(Seen 6'4" people ride them just fine, stop moaning!)

I haven't ridden F800S/ST, but do kinda fancy one - I believe they're a good chunk lighter than the other options you list.

Going to copy pasta from here:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=278087&highlight=

As I've sort of said what I feel about my one

Quote:
Another 1050 owner here

It is a great bike. Most of the time I'm riding with the wife on the back nowadays and she's really comfy, as am I as it's got a lot of room on it.

The engine is great. It makes good noises and the overrun sounds wicked. I love the blue back-lit dials at night. The headlight is reasonable. The little cubby-hole in the fairing is useful.

It handles really well for a bike if its size and it doesn't feel that heavy IMO. The only thing I will say - and this is more pronounced with the Pilot Road 3's I've fitted - is that it's a bit slow on initial turn in, it's not very eager and you do have to give it time to settle into the bend, but once it's over on its side and gripping it's really nice.

The panniers aren't that big inside. In fact they're pretty useless. They're also not entirely waterproof.

The chain needs adjusting a lot. Not because the chain needs adjusting, but because the eccentric hub thingy that you have to turn with a C spanner has a habit of getting stuck, meaning you can't adjust the chain, which is annoying. Regular unsticking by adjusting chain = no problem.

12,000 mile services are VERY expensive.

I'll say what I always say about it. It's a great bike, and I really like it. But I've not come to love it. Not sure why, but we've just not bonded that well - even though it does everything I've ever asked of it.

HTH

In short, not a bad bike at all - great engine, but somehow it's just not a heart string puller.

Great engine (dat burble Wub ) but never thought much of the brakes.

In truth, it was a bit big and heavy for me, at five foot six. Loved it for distance, was a bit unwieldy for me in town.

Ride one, see what you think. Thumbs Up

6'6'' here. I got the Sprint mainly because of it size, and it fits.
Really well in fact, so you won't have any issues on that front.

The triple in that thing is a peach. Pulls nice and smoothly from any gear.
Hell, first day I rode it I wondered what the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are for Laughing

Seat's all right, but it doesn't work with me (I got spoiled by an armchair Versys comes equipped with Embarassed ).

The rest of the bike is good. Not excellent, but good.
Brakes are bit weak, but they do the job. Needs a bit of convincing to lean it, but when it does, it stays there.
It's shit in town, due to weighing something like 1/4 of a ton filled up, and pushing the thing around is a massive pain.

But the exhaust does this hooliganish pop every time you come off the throttle, which makes it all ok Wub

Overall however, it's a good bike. Not one I'd fall in love with, but a good one regardless.

With arry saying much the same, sounds like it's not 1000 miles away from the Bandit... apart from the engine Twisted Evil

It's all 'bout the engine yo.

But you're pretty much spot on. At the end of the day I'll be down to whatever feels right for you to be honest. Sprint and Bandit are so similar that you should really sit on both and get a decide which one feels right.

Personally, I think that the main thing that goes in favour of the Sprint in your case, is how accommodating it is for taller riders (tank's got plenty of legroom), whilst the Bandit's tank just gets in a way IMHO.

But the Bandit doesn't have that burble, which means it's shite and you shouldn't buy it. Twisted Evil

Engine is amazing, handling is pretty good for such a heavy lump. It's fantastic two up, dead comfy. I'm 6' 2" with a 37" inside leg and it's got loads of room.

Brakes are crap, especially if it's an older (05) Sprint - fix is 675 brake pistons and a larger master cylinder.

Sprint 1050 in a nutshell:

THINKING HERE ex police r1200rt ARE CHEAP SOME PRIVATE ONES ARE TOO, pan 1300? or sticking with BMW R1150 If you want comfort you wont beat the R1200 series Triumph 1300 Pan 1300 come close.
Nippy and economical? F800st GREAT LITTLE BIKES .
More exotic tends to mean more expensive insurance more maintenance costs. If you want to power along happily in comfort at 90+ Big bikes not sport bikes, because they are hell after a few hours...
Notice the CBR1100xx Blackbird isn't on your list , with full luggage , taller screen Bar risers or straight bar conversion and you have yourself a bloody quick long range touring missile ....6mm shim mod on the rear shock and you have yourself a better handling ;long range touring missile. and I mean 168 mph two up quick ! Triumph sprint is a totally different animal so that really comes down to what you want it to do and how many different roles it has to fill and what the cost restrictions are,,,,

Try a R1200GS man. Perfect for 6 fitters. They go like shite aff a shovel two. (Big torkz). Great MPG and superb luggage/cargo capabilities.
Some vibes at some revs but nice ride.
Surprisingly better than a Sportsbike on a backroad. Cool
So much so that Jixer riders totally hate the way the back-end of a GS looks Razz

As far as looks are concerened, I could never see much of my GS from the helm. Smile

Find me a good one for £4k, and I'll set the Sprint on fire to get it Razz

It was, but the insurance turns out to be at least double all the others for me, so I've parked that one for a couple more years' NCB

I've ridden both the 800 and 1200 GSs (though only 5 minutes each) - I much prefered the 800 - although the 1200 was amazing in its way, it felt like the Mercedes of the bike world, and I'm not that old yet Wink

funnily enough, I traded a Sprint for a GS and never looked back. Sprint was OK but the extra oomfph in the GS and the handling just puts it to shame.
You should easy peasy find a good GS for under 4k. Where are you looking man? Very Happy

Mostly Ebay and MCN once in a while.
There are some nice, low mileage ones popping up once in a while for £5k or so, but I can't make any serious moves as of now.

Not until I get rid of the Sprint first that is Razz (Expect an ad in "Bikes & Accessories" soon Laughing ).

Out of curiosity, do you do the valve clearance adjustment yourself?
If so, how long does it take you to do it?

If you mean the GS, I bought my GS from a Honda dealer (walloper spits). I got it for K4.5 in 2007 with 4000miles on the clock it was/had been a Grey Import but the previous owner had imported it.
It was aye serviced at BMW. But those twins are a dawdle to work on.
If you buy a GS then I have the 'Haynes book of Ommissions' for the GS if you want it. Nae use to me now as I've upped my game since then. Smile
I think my 1st GS had about 15k miles when I sold it for another on a 06 plate two years later. BMW P-EX 6K pounds (Dam... Some fucker has changed my keyborad to Murikan)

If you're on about the sprint then they are a cnut and some need the engine (camshaft) out to set the tappets. Shocked Depends on year of manufacture. Can do yer sel or pay a garage 2/3 hundred quids.
