They are a scooter and not that fast a one at that.
I'd go for a geared bike like a NSR125 or similar myself.

Incidentally, I do have a DNA125 (well, a third of one, technically), but it's a write off we used it for some scooter racing a couple of years ago.

Gilera DNA's? lol they are a weird bike/scooter. The tyres are too big, the brakes are too shit, the electrics are shit, and they are a twat to work on.

My daughter has a 50 version and loves it. Saying that she wanted an Aprilla but we couldn't afford a decent one. Laughing

They seem to hold their value pretty well.

Horrible looking scooters, and pretty damn slow too. Go for something like an nsr or cg, they are much better build quality than the Gilera. However, if it really is £200, go for it.

I'd work out how much it'll cost you to get working (including MOT etc); it may not be such a great price adding it all up.

slow? Am sorry but my 50cc version couldnt be caught up with, it even beat my mates DNA 50 cos his was a bit worse. And just before everyone over reacts, it couldnt be beaten by peds.

They are nippy an teach you alot about cornering, but the brakes are a tad bit underpowered. I had the red one on a 03 plate.

Maybe yours was faster. The DNA 125 is not.
Slower than a CG by a tad, I'd say.
Yes, it probably would still have beaten your 50, but in the grand scheme of things that doesn't really make it that 'fast' Smile.

Brakes seemed ok after a service and new pads.

From my experience with them (rode 2 of them) Yes, but squeeze hard enough and they will stop you tbh your not really going to go that fast.

When I was first looking at bikes I was in this position, really wanted an automatic to mess around on but did not want a scooter. The DNA took my fancy but I've heard all sorts of horror stories of them falling apart.

I think you'd need to buy one in a fairly good condition, and be sure to keep it that way. From my experience, nobody really looks after a scooter, they just switch it on and off they go. I despise how the exhausts always seem to go rusty first.

This looks like a nice example, if I had the money I'd buy it, would make a fun little thing to toy about on. Smile

Hi, I'd really appreciate some help - thinking of getting a 125 as a way of getting used to a bike on the road without worrying about gears... how small (I'm 5'11) are they? How would it be on a dual carriageway, on a hill??

if your 5.11 you'll have no worries, there pretty damn small bikes.
as for dual carridgeways, it wont like a strong wind, they dont way much, but most small bikes dont so not a lot you can do there.
on a hill it would probably be pretty slow, it is essentially a moped.

i would just recommend a geared bike, its not as hard as you may think Thumbs Up

Thanks Clancy, probably should have mentioned that for the first few months it’ll be used just for commuting… the idea is to build confidence by riding 15 miles or so to work each day, and get something faster and better in a few months. Do you still think a bike to begin with is a better option? Very Happy

theres nothing really wrong with starting on it if you want to build confidence, you may get bored of it pretty quick though.
but yeah if your just wanting to build some confidence before you tackle gears and a bigger bike then yeah, why not Thumbs Up

My brothers mate had the 50 version and it just fell to bits all the time :p But for the price you're paying I'd say go for it.

the DNA was built with good parts it has the Piaggio leader engine & front & rear disc brakes which for a 125 scoot is unusual & awesome, therefore the brakes are pretty good, I would suggest you put some new pads on TUG
the build quality can be dodgy like ur typical Italian but with a bit of TLC & keeping on top of it it's fine & parts are readily available Laughing
