Doing the rounds on FB at the mo.

Seems like an awesome idea, but I can't help but think it's being grossly over simplified in terms of execution, and how the big businesses would ever let it gain a foothold.

I guess a few prototypes would need to be demonstrated. But, all being well......

It's really, really, really, really awesome.

Hopefully they can start to do it with cameras, TVs, computers, even cars.... (not necessarily making everything into 'bloks', but creating a new social attitude of 'repair, not replace'.

Finally a bit of a U-turn for consumer culture.

Cool Thumbs Up Cool

(as long as it takes off...)

Really stupid idea, for these reasons:

Double the size of any phone. It would also be the end of the fairly decent water resistance most phones have - atleast if it was done in a way that was user servicable.

Even if components were made to a standard size and connectors (like computers are), technology moves so fast they would not be compatable with the next generation. So whats the point? If you want to upgrade, just buy the better phone to start with. Phone tech moves a lot faster than computers! Most breakable parts are replaceable if your willing to pay high UK skilled labour rates.

Whos going to write the firmware allowing you to swap parts? Consider the difficulty 3rd party developers have making the latest Android to run on a 2.x device like ZTE blade. Its been done, but unlikely the camera, wifi or gps will work without a lot of effort.

Lord Percy - How exactly could you do this with a TV?!? I dont understand why you think thats a good idea. And on the subject I have repaired several TFT computer monitors (bad PSU caps every time).

For the joy of speculative debate, I'm gonna have to disagree.

Pretty sure you could get a fairly standard robust waterproof casing around the whole thing that still allowed you to operate the touch screen. I had one for for my S2 while I worked in a factory full of oil and metal filings. The case was fairly generic and any device of similar size could be fitted into it.

Well you can fairly easily upgrade a computer by unplugging a part and adding a new one, be it speakers, webcam, cpu, ram, wifi dongle, hard disk, psu - you name it. What's the difference? Ok there are some technical limitations, but no doubt a few key players will dominate the market and create 'bloks' that all specifically work best together as a bundle, and so be it. The main idea is that individual parts can be replaced, rather than the whole unit. Of course sometimes it may be best to chuck the whole thing and start over, but I do think this new idea will greatly extend the life of the parts that did actually still work ok.

Laughing No idea how you'd do it with a TV, it was just a general frivolous example. But you have to admit it would be a great idea for new cars, laptops and other things that people entirely replace when all they really need is a single new part. Well, cars can't be turned into 'bloks', but certainly, as I said, a new culture of 'don't replace, repair instead', may be brought about. So maybe when someone wants to make their car an eco model, they can actually do some good for the planet by just replacing the engine. Or if their TV or computer screen breaks, they'll have the nouse to look for that bad PSU cap you talk of, or will at least be willing to find someone to do it for them, rather than just going straight to the Argos catalogue.

I'm not saying everything can be turned into 'bloks', I just mean it could be the start of a new culture of resourcefulness.
