I need to get my son a bike for his birthday, he wants a KTM 125 EXC but people are saying a learner will not be able to ride it legally. is this true?

I doubt you could legally ride one of those at 17 on a full A1 licence, let alone L plates?

No way, HP is far too excessive.

Closest you'll get is a DT125.

Do you?

I'm sure he does. Wink

Nope, no way, no how. He can't ride that legally until he's 19 and has an A2 license, even if he passes his A1 tests before then.

What does he want it for? And (this is a different question), what does he actually need it for?

Oh, even if he's a brand whore, don't even think about getting a KTM Duke 125 as an alternative. There's report after report on them being absolute lemons, with early and repeated failures in multiple components.

Whats the budget/purpose for the bike. And how likely will he keep it before getting a car/upgrading the bike.

Like most 17 year olds my younger self included the most expensive flashy bikes appeal most, but realistically for most riders they end up a wasted investment after x-months/couple of years/damage due to being inexperienced.

Get something cheap and 2nd hand.

It'll be in the garden rusting in 6 months when he's old enough to either get a car so he can take his mates to the pub or gets bored.

Afterthought: Stop spoiling the bugger. Teach him the value of money by making HIM get the bloody thing!

Or a WR 125 if he's set on a trail/MX style bike. They are tall(er) though, be sure to look up the seat height of whatever you buy in case he can't reach the floor.

And ^^ these comments should also be considered unless money isn't much of an issue Smile

Second hand YBR. If he needs Rolling Eyes something more flash to crash, drop, derp, bodge and neglect invite him to save up for and purchase the aforementioned unobtanium KTM in the future when he has set aside the required amount of shekels. Oh and more importantly obtained the required licence.
